Summary of the socio-economic development of the region
Population size and migration

The population of the region as of May1, 2026 amounted to 717,4 thousand people, including 486,1 thousand people (67,8%) – urban, 231,3 thousand people (32,2%) – rural residents.

The natural decline in the population in January-April 2026 amounted -459 people (in the corresponding period of the previous year, the natural decline in the population amounted to -297 people).

The number of births as January-April 2026 amounted to 2175 people (9,3% fewer than in January-April 2025), the number of deaths amounted to 2634 people (2,2% fewer thanin January-April 2025).

The balance of migration is negative and amounted to -1137 people (in January-April 2025 –-1175 people), including in external migration – a positive balance of -174 people (38), in internal – negative-1311 people and (-1213).

Labor and income

The number of unemployed in the І quarter of 2026 amounted to 17,5 thousand people.

The unemployment rate was 4,6% of the labor force.

The number of persons registered with employment agencies as unemployed as of June1,2026 amounted to 13,2 thousand people, or 3,5% of the labor force.1

The average monthly nominal wages accrued to employees (excluding small enterprises engaged in entrepreneurial activities) in the І quarter of 2026 amounted to 438659 tenge, an increase compared to the І quarter of 2025 amounted to 8,4%.

The real wage index in І quarter 2026 was 97,1%.

In the IV quarter of 2025 the average per capita nominal cash income of the population of the region, according to the estimate, amounted to 282775 tenge, which is 11,9% higher than in IV quarter 2024, the growth rate of real cash income for the specified period is 99,6%.

Industry statistics

The volume of industrial production in January-May 2026 amounted to 1460407,2 million tenge in current prices, which is 4,0% less than in January-May 2025.

In the mining and mine workings industry, production volumes decreased by 3,1%, in the manufacturing industry– by 4,5%, in the supply of electricity, gas, steam, hot water and air conditioned - by 3,3%, in water supply; sanitation, waste collection, treatment and disposal, pollution elimination activities an increase of 7,0% was noted.

The volume of gross output of agricultural products (services) in January-May 2026 amounted to 101 826,5 million tenge, or 102,3% by January-May 2025.

The volume of cargo turnover in January-May 2026 amounted to 2171,8million tkm (taking into account the assessment of the volume of cargo turnover of individual entrepreneurs engaged in commercial transportation), or 87,9% compared to January-May 2025.

The volume of passenger traffic – 667,0 million pkm, or 88,2% by January-May 2025.

The volume of construction works (services) amounted to 118612,9 million tenge, or 105,5% compared by January-May 2025.

In January-May 2026, the total area of housing put into operation increased by 1,2% and amounted to 117,8 thousand square meters. At the same time, the total area of individual residential buildings put into operation decreased by 0,2% (30,4 thousand square meters).

The volume of investments in fixed capital in January-May 2026 amounted to 244544,1 million tenge, or 102,5% by January-May 2025.

The number of registered legal entities as of June1, 2026 amounted to 14862 units and increased by 0,09% compared to the corresponding date of the previous year including 14498 units with less than 100 employees. The number of operating legal entities amounted to 12242 units, including 11880units –small businesses. The number of registered small and medium enterprises (legal entities) in the region amounted to 12091 units and increased by 0,09% compared to the corresponding date of the previous year.

Economics

The volume of gross regional product for January-December 2025 amounted to 3512881,2 million tenge at current prices. Compared to the corresponding period of January-December 2024, real GRP decreased by 1%. In the structure of GRP, the share of production of goods amounted to 51,6%, services – 47,4%.

The consumer price index in May 2026 compared to December 2025 was 104,6%.

Prices for food products increased by 4,6%, non-food products – by 4,7%, paid services for the population – by 4,6%.

The prices of enterprises producing industrial products in May 2026 compared to December 2025 increased by 1,7%.

The volume of retail trade in January-May 2026 amounted to 507029,8 million tenge, or 0,4% more than the corresponding period in 2025.

The volume of wholesale trade in January-May 2026 amounted to 394137,0 million tenge, or 111,1% compared to the corresponding period in 2025.

According to preliminary data, in January-April 2026, mutual trade with the EAEU countries amounted to 892,6 million US dollars and increased by 2,2 times compared to January-April 2026, including exports – 259,9 million US dollars (by 28,7% more), imports – 632,8 million US dollars (3,2 times more).
