Summary of the socio-economic development of the region
Population size and migration

The population of the region as of February 1, 2026 amounted to 718,4 thousand people, including 486,4 thousand people (67,7%) – urban, 232 thousand people (32,3%) – rural residents.

The natural decline in the population in January 2026 amounted -59 people (in the corresponding period of the previous year, the natural de-cline in the population amounted to -121 people).

The number of births as January 2026 amounted to 566 people (0,7% more in January 2025), the number of deaths amounted to 625 people (8,5% less in January 2025).

The balance of migration is negative and amounted to -497 people (in January 2025 – -317 people), including in external migration – a positive balance of - 67 people (13), in internal – negative -564 people and (-330).

Labor

The number of unemployed in the ІV quarter of 2025 amounted to 17,8 thousand people.

The unemployment rate was 4,6% of the labor force.

The number of persons registered with employment agencies as unemployed as of March 1, 2026 amounted to 11,8 thousand people, or 3,8% of the labor force.1

Industry statistics

The volume of industrial production in January-February2026 amounted to 454 868,8 million tenge in current prices, which is 17,6% less than in January-February 2025.

In the mining and mine workings industry, production volumes decreased by 6,7%, in the manufacturing industry – by 21,8%, in the supply of electricity, gas, steam, hot water and air conditioned - by 8,4%, in water supply; sanitation, waste collection, treatment and disposal, pollution elimination activities an increase of 9,4% was noted.

The volume of gross output of agricultural products (services) in January-February 2026 amounted to 32098,9 million tenge, or 97,5% by January-February 2025.

The volume of cargo turnover in January-February 2026 amounted to 946,6 million tkm (taking into account the assessment of the volume of cargo turnover of individual entrepreneurs engaged in commercial transportation), or 92,8 % compared to January- February 2025.

The volume of passenger traffic – 252,8 million pkm, or 88,3 % by January- February 2025.

The volume of construction works (services) amounted to 25417,1 million tenge, or 115,9% compared by January-February 2025.

In January-February 2026, the total area of housing put into operation increased by 9% and amounted to 12,2 thousand square meters. At the same time, the total area of individual residential buildings put into operation increased by 8,9% (12,1 thousand square meters).

The volume of investments in fixed capital in January-February 2026 amounted to 89914,4 million tenge, or 103,5% by January-February 2025.

The number of registered legal entities as of March 1, 2026 amounted to 14840 units and increased by 0,03% compared to the corresponding date of the previous year, including 14471 units with less than 100 employees. The number of operating legal entities amounted to 12262 units, including 11894 units-small businesses. The number of registered small and medium enterprises (legal entities) in the region amounted to 12086 units and increased by 0,05% compared to the corresponding date of the previous year.

Economics

The volume of gross regional product for January-September 2025 amounted to 3512881,2 million tenge at current prices. Compared to the corresponding period of January-September 2024, real GRP decreased by 1%. In the structure of GRP, the share of production of goods amounted to 51,6%, services – 47,4%.

The consumer price index in February 2026 compared to December 2025 was 102,3%.

Prices for food products increased by 2,0%, non-food products – by 2,6%, paid services for the population – by 2,4%.

The prices of enterprises producing industrial products in February 2026 compared to December 2025 increased by 8,8%.

The volume of retail trade in January-February 2026 amounted to 176424,5 million tenge, or 0,4% more than the corresponding period in 2025.

The volume of wholesale trade in January-February 2026 amounted to 121203,9 million tenge, or 114,2% compared to the corresponding period in 2025.

According to preliminary data, in January 2026, mutual trade with the EAEU countries amounted to 203,2 million US dollars and increased by 2,1 times compared to January 2026, including exports – 54,9 million US dollars (by 2,9% more), imports – 148,2 million US dollars (3,5 times more).
