Summary of the socio-economic development of the region
Population size and migration

The population of the region as of March 1, 2026 amounted to 718 thousand people, including 486,2 thousand people (67,7%) – urban, 231,8 thousand people (32,3%) – rural residents.

The natural decline in the population in January-February 2026 amounted -162 people (in the corresponding period of the previous year, the natural decline in the population amounted to -198 people).

The number of births as January-February 2026 amounted to 1051 people (6,7% % less in January-February 2025), the number of deaths amounted to 1213 people (8,4% less in January-February 2025).

The balance of migration is negative and amounted to -867 people (in January-February 2025 – -616 people), including in external migration – a positive balance of - 99 people (19), in internal – negative -966 people and (-635).

Labor and income

The number of unemployed in the ІV quarter of 2025 amounted to 17,8 thousand people.

The unemployment rate was 4,6% of the labor force.

The number of persons registered with employment agencies as unemployed as of April 1, 2026 amounted to 12,9 thousand people, or 3,4% of the labor force.1

The average monthly nominal wages accrued to employees (excluding small enterprises engaged in entrepreneurial activities) in the ІV quarter of 2025 amounted to 454763 tenge, an increase compared to the ІV quarter of 2024 amounted to 10%.

The real wage index in ІV quarter 2025 was 99,2%.

In the IV quarter of 2025 the average per capita nominal cash income of the population of the region, according to the estimate, amounted to 282775 tenge, which is 11,9% higher than in IV quarter 2024, the growth rate of real cash income for the specified period is 99,6%.

Industry statistics

The volume of industrial production in January-March 2026 amounted to 805875,6 million tenge in current prices, which is 11,8% less than in January-March 2025.

In the mining and mine workings industry, production volumes decreased by 4,6%, in the manufacturing industry– by 14,5%, in the supply of electricity, gas, steam, hot water and air conditioned - by 8,4%, in water supply; sanitation, waste collection, treatment and disposal, pollution elimination activities an increase of 11,0% was noted.

The volume of gross output of agricultural products (services) in January-March 2026 amounted to 54555,9 million tenge, or 101,9% by January-March 2025.

The volume of cargo turnover in January-March 2026 amounted to 1392,9 million tkm (taking into account the assessment of the volume of cargo turnover of individual entrepreneurs engaged in commercial transportation), or 91,7 % compared to January-March 2025.

The volume of passenger traffic – 393,3 million pkm, or 88,8 % by January-March 2025.

The volume of construction works (services) amounted to 56818,3 million tenge, or 115,9% compared by January-March 2025.

In January-March 2026, the total area of housing put into operation increased by 2,4% and amounted to 67,9 thousand square meters. At the same time, the total area of individual residential buildings put into operation decreased by 0,5% (18,7 thousand square meters).

The volume of investments in fixed capital in January-March 2026 amounted to 166719 million tenge, or 123,4% by January-March 2025.

The number of registered legal entities as of April 1, 2026 amounted to 14858 units and increased by 0,3% compared to the corresponding date of the previous year, including 14491 units with less than 100 employees. The number of operating legal entities amounted to 12221 units, including 11855 units-small businesses. The number of registered small and medium enterprises (legal entities) in the region amounted to 12099 units and increased by 0,3% compared to the corresponding date of the previous year.

Economics

The volume of gross regional product for January-September 2025 amounted to 3512881,2 million tenge at current prices. Compared to the corresponding period of January-September 2024, real GRP decreased by 1%. In the structure of GRP, the share of production of goods amounted to 51,6%, services – 47,4%.

The consumer price index in March 2026 compared to December 2025 was 103,1%.

Prices for food products increased by 2,8%, non-food products – by 3,4%, paid services for the population – by 3,1%.

The prices of enterprises producing industrial products in March 2026 compared toDecember 2025 increased by 6,8%.

The volume of retail trade in January-March 2026 amounted to 292381,8 million tenge, or 0,5% more than the corresponding period in 2025.

The volume of wholesale trade in January-March 2026 amounted to 228648,5 million tenge, or 120,1% compared to the corresponding period in 2025.

According to preliminary data, in January-February 2026, mutual trade with the EAEU countries amounted to 438,7 million US dollars and increased by 2,7 times compared to January-February 2026, including exports – 91,2 million US dollars (by 22,8% more), imports – 347,5 million US dollars (3,9 times more).
