The population of the Kostanay region as of May 1, 2026 amounted to 820.3 thousand people, including 525.3 thousand people (64%) – urban, 295 thousand people (36%) – rural residents.
The natural decline in the population in January-April 2026 amounted to 332 people (in the corresponding period of the previous year the natural increase in the population – 151 people).
The number of births as January-April 2026 amounted to 2409 people (9.9% less than in January-April 2025), the number of deaths amounted to 2741 people (8.6% more than in January-April 2025).
The balance of migration is negative and amounted to 847 people (in January-April 2025 – -1238 people), including in external migration – 110 people (103 people), in internal migration – -957 people (-1341 people).
The number of unemployed in the I quarter of 2026 amounted to 20447 people.
The unemployment rate was 4.6% of the labor force.
The number of persons registered with employment agencies as unemployed as of June 1, 2026 amounted to 9773 people or 2.2% of the labor force.
The average monthly nominal wages accrued to employees (excluding small enterprises engaged in entrepreneurial activities) in the I quarter of 2026 amounted to 394942 tenge, an increase compared to the I quarter of 2025 amounted to 10.1%.
The real wage index in I quarter 2026 was 98.9%.
In the IV quarter of 2025 the average per capita nominal cash income of the population of the region, according to the estimate, amounted to 255730 tenge, which is 16.7% higher than in IV quarter 2024, the index of real monetary income for the specified period is 104.3%.
The volume of industrial production in January-May 2026 amounted to 1294265.4 million tenge in current prices, which is 3.7% more than in January-May 2025.
In the mining and mine workings industry, production volumes decreased by 9.6%, in water supply; sanitation; waste collection, treatment and disposal, pollution elimination activities – by 5.1%. In the manufacturing industry the production amounted to increased by 8.6%, in the supply of electricity, gas, steam, hot water and air conditioned – by 6.8%.
The volume of gross output of agriculture, forestry and fisheries products (services) in January-May 2026 amounted to 86077.6 million tenge or 101% by January-May 2025.
The volume of cargo turnover in January-May 2026 amounted to 10140.9 million t-km (taking into account the assessment of the volume of cargo turnover of individual entrepreneurs engaged in commercial transportation), or 86.2% compared to January-May 2025.
The volume of passenger traffic – 710.8 million p-km, or 160.3% by January-May 2025.
The volume of construction works (services) amounted to 82744.7 million tenge or 103.3% compared to January-May 2025.
In January-May 2026, the total area of housing put into operation decreased by 7.9% and amounted to 165.3 thousand square meters, of which in multi-apartment buildings – by 5.9% (131.8 thousand square meters). At the same time, the total area of individual residential buildings put into operation decreased by 18.3% (32.1 thousand square meters).
The volume of investments in fixed capital in January-May 2026 amounted to 209782.7 million tenge or 92.5% by January-May 2025.
The number of registered legal entities as of June 1, 2026 amounted to 14683 units and decreased by 0.3% compared to the corresponding date of the previous year, including 14306 units with less than 100 employees. The number of operating legal entities amounted to 12693 units, including 12316 units - small businesses. The number of registered small and medium enterprises (legal entities) in the region amounted to 11360 units and decreased by 0.4% compared to the corresponding date of the previous year.
The volume of gross regional product for January-December 2025 amounted to 5932830.1 million tenge at current prices. Compared to the corresponding period of 2024, real GRP increased by 108.2%. In the structure of GRP, the share of production of goods amounted to 52.5%, services – 45.6%.
The consumer price index in May 2026 compared to December 2025 was 104.5%.
Prices for food products increased by 4.6 %, non-food products, paid services for the population – by 4.4%. The prices of enterprises producing industrial products in May 2026 compared to December 2025 increased by 1.9%.
The volume of retail trade in January-May 2026 amounted to 274305.1 million tenge, or 4.4% more than the corresponding period in 2025.
The volume of wholesale trade in January-May 2026 amounted to 462831.1 million tenge, or 107.9% compared to the corresponding period in 2025.
According to preliminary data, in January-April 2026, mutual trade with the EAEU countries amounted to 452 million US dollars and increased by 1.7% compared to January-April 2025, including exports – 165 million US dollars (by 0.4% more), imports – 287 million US dollars (2.5% more).
