Summary of the socio-economic development of the region
Population size and migration

The population of the Kostanay region as of March 1, 2025 amounted to 824.9 thousand people, including 521.8 thousand people (63.3%) – urban, 303.1 thousand people (36.7%) – rural residents.

The natural decline in the population in January-February 2025 amounted to 30 people (in the corresponding period of the previous year the natural increase in the population – 166 people).

The number of births as January-February 2025 amounted to 1233 people (24.8% less than in January-February 2024), the number of deaths amounted to 1263 people (14.3% less than in January-February 2024).

The balance of migration is negative and amounted to 622 people (in January-February 2024 – -905 people), including in external migration – 69 people (74 people), in internal migration – -691 people (-979 people).

Labor and income

The number of unemployed in the IV quarter of 2024 amounted to 21234 people.

The unemployment rate was 4.6% of the labor force.

The number of persons registered with employment agencies as unemployed as of April 1, 2025 amounted to 9209 people or 2% of the labor force.

The average monthly nominal wages accrued to employees (excluding small enterprises engaged in entrepreneurial activities) in the IV quarter of 2024 amounted to 376535 tenge, an increase compared to the IV quarter of 2023 amounted to 12.3%.

The real wage index in IV quarter 2024 was 104.4%.

In the IV quarter of 2024 the average per capita nominal cash income of the population of the region, according to the estimate, amounted to 217438 tenge, which is 10.6% higher than in IV quarter 2023, the index of real monetary income for the specified period is 102.8%.

Industry statistics

The volume of industrial production in January-Mach 2025 amounted to 727884.9 million tenge in current prices, which is 2% less than in in January-Mach 2024.

In the mining and mine workings industry, production volumes increased by 5.6%. In the manufacturing industry the decrease in production amounted to 4.2%, in the supply of electricity, gas, steam, hot water and air conditioned – by 1.8%, in water supply; sanitation; waste collection, treatment and disposal, pollution elimination activities – by 16.6%.

The volume of gross output of agricultural products (services) in January-March 2025 amounted to 34594.2 million tenge or 102,4% by January- March 2024.

The volume of cargo turnover in January-March 2025 amounted to 7232 million t-km (taking into account the assessment of the volume of cargo turnover of individual entrepreneurs engaged in commercial transportation), or 115.6% compared to January-March 2024.

The volume of passenger traffic – 271.2 million p-km, or 72.1% by January-March 2024.

The volume of construction works (services) amounted to 46333.9 million tenge or 166.5% compared to January-March 2024.

In January-March 2025, the total area of housing put into operation increased by 2.3% and amounted to 120.4 thousand square meters, of which in multi-apartment buildings - by 8.9% (91.3 thousand square meters). At the same time, the total area of individual residential buildings put into operation decreased by 12.1% (29 thousand square meters).

The volume of investments in fixed capital in January-March 2025 amounted to 122006.5 million tenge or 113.2% by January-March 2024.

The number of registered legal entities as of April 1, 2025 amounted to 14707 units and decreased by 0.8% compared to the corresponding date of the previous year, including 14325 units with less than 100 employees. The number of operating legal entities amounted to 12808 units, including 12429 units - small businesses.

The number of registered small and medium enterprises (legal entities) in the region amounted to 11379 units and decreased by 1% compared to the corresponding date of the previous year.

Economics

The volume of gross regional product for January-September 2024 amounted to 3052487 million tenge at current prices. Compared to the corresponding period of 2023, real GRP increased by 103.6%. In the structure of GRP, the share of production of goods amounted to 45.1%, services – 48.2%.

The consumer price index in March 2025 compared to December 2024 was 103,3%.

Prices for food products increased by 3,6%, non-food products – by 2,5%, paid services for the population – by 4%.

The prices of enterprises producing industrial products in March 2025 compared to December 2024 increased by 2,8%.

The volume of retail trade in January-March 2025 amounted to 143346.9 million tenge, or 1.5% more than the corresponding period in 2024.

The volume of wholesale trade in January-March 2025 amounted to 213102 million tenge, or 132.9% compared to the corresponding period in 2024.

According to preliminary data, in January-February 2025, mutual trade with the EAEU countries amounted to 204.1 million US dollars and decreased by 16% compared to January-February 2024, including exports – 72.8 million US dollars (by 21.6% less), imports – 131,3 million US dollars (12,6% less).
