Population size and migration

The population of the Kostanay region as of September 1, 2024 amounted to 827.1 thousand people, including 519.4 thousand people (62.8%) – urban, 307.7 thousand people (37.2%) – rural residents.

The natural increase in the population in January-August 2024 amounted to 664 people (in the corresponding period of the previous year – 954 people).

The number of births as January-August 2024 amounted to 6209 people (4.8% less than in January-August 2023), the number of deaths amounted to 5545 people (0.4% less than in January-August 2023).

The balance of migration is negative and amounted to 3506 people (in January-August 2023 – -2533 people), including in external migration – 117 people (-257 people), in internal migration – -3623 people (-2276 people).

Labor and income

The number of unemployed in the II quarter of 2024 amounted to 21469 people.

The unemployment rate was 4.6% of the labor force.

The number of persons registered with employment agencies as unemployed as of October 1, 2024 amounted to 9173 people or 2% of the labor force.

The average monthly nominal wages accrued to employees (excluding small enterprises engaged in entrepreneurial activities) in the II quarter of 2024 amounted to 337636 tenge, an increase compared to the II quarter of 2023 amounted to 12.5%.

The real wage index in II quarter 2024 was 103.9%.

In the II quarter of 2024 the average per capita nominal cash income of the population of the region, according to the estimate, amounted to 190537 tenge, which is 7,6% higher than in II quarter 2023, the index of real monetary income for the specified period is 99.4%.

Industry statistics

The volume of industrial production in January-September 2024 amounted to 1993529.8 million tenge in current prices, which is 3.6% less than in January-September 2023.

In the mining and mine workings industry, production volumes increased by 9.2%, in the supply of electricity, gas, steam, hot water and air conditioned – by 2.2%, in water supply; sanitation; waste collection, treatment and disposal, pollution elimination activities – by 17.8%. In the manufacturing industry the decrease in production amounted to 8.6%.

The volume of gross output of agricultural products (services) in January-September 2024 amounted to                         437884.3 million tenge or 123.2% by January-September 2023.

The volume of cargo turnover in January-September 2024 amounted to 19915.1 million t-km (taking into account the assessment of the volume of cargo turnover of individual entrepreneurs engaged in commercial transportation), or 98,5% compared to January-September 2023.

The volume of passenger traffic – 1417 million p-km, or 116,9% by January-September 2023.

The volume of construction works (services) amounted to 196228 million tenge or 116.8% compared to January-September 2023.

In January-September 2024, the total area of housing put into operation increased by 0.9% and amounted to 378.7 thousand square meters, of which in multi-apartment buildings - by 1.2% (257.2 thousand square meters). At the same time, the total area of individual residential buildings put into operation decreased by 3.4% (116.2 thousand square meters).

The volume of investments in fixed capital in January-September 2024 amounted to 380631 million tenge or 107.6% by January-September 2023.

The number of registered legal entities as of October 1, 2024 amounted to 14918 units and decreased by 1.7% compared to the corresponding date of the previous year, including 14523 units with less than 100 employees. The number of operating legal entities amounted to 12820 units, including 12427 units - small businesses. The number of registered small and medium enterprises (legal entities) in the region amounted to 11591 units and decreased by 2.1% compared to the corresponding date of the previous year.

Economics

The volume of gross regional product for January-June 2024 amounted to 1771516,7 million tenge at current prices. Compared to the corresponding period of January-June 2023, real GRP increased by 101.7%. In the structure of GRP, the share of production of goods amounted to 44.5%, services – 48.8%.

The consumer price index in September 2024 compared to December 2023 was 105%.

Prices for food products increased by 2,7%, non-food products – by 4,9%, paid services for the population – by 8,2%.                 The prices of enterprises producing industrial products in September 2024 compared to December 2023 increased by 0,6%.

The volume of retail trade in January-September 2024 amounted to 477753.6 million tenge, or 10% more than the corresponding period in 2023.

The volume of wholesale trade in January-September 2024 amounted to 778112.2 million tenge, or 108.4% compared to the corresponding period in 2023.

According to preliminary data, in January-August 2024, mutual trade with the EAEU countries amounted to           1065.6 million US dollars and decreased by 12.1% compared to January-August 2023, including exports –                                       398.9 million US dollars (by 20.5% less), imports – 666.7 million US dollars (6.2% less).
