Population size and migration

The population of the Kostanay region as of April 1, 2026 amounted to 820.6 thousand people, including 525 thousand people (64%) – urban, 295.6 thousand people (36%) – rural residents.

The natural decline in the population in January-March 2026 amounted to 222 people (in the corresponding period of the previous year the natural increase in the population – 59 people).

The number of births as January-March 2026 amounted to 1789 people (6.9% less than in January-March 2025), the number of deaths amounted to 2011 people (7.9% more than in January-March 2025).

The balance of migration is negative and amounted to 646 people (in January-March 2025 – -1004 people), including in external migration – 114 people (74 people), in internal migration – -760 people (-1078 people).

Labor and income

The number of unemployed in the I quarter of 2026 amounted to 20447 people.

The unemployment rate was 4.6% of the labor force.

The number of persons registered with employment agencies as unemployed as of May 1, 2026 amounted to 10198 people or 2.2% of the labor force.

The average monthly nominal wages accrued to employees (excluding small enterprises engaged in entrepreneurial activities) in the I quarter of 2026 amounted to 394942 tenge, an increase compared to the I quarter of 2025 amounted to 10.1%.

The real wage index in I quarter 2026 was 98.9%.

In the IV quarter of 2025 the average per capita nominal cash income of the population of the region, according to the estimate, amounted to 255730 tenge, which is 16.7% higher than in IV quarter 2024, the index of real monetary income for the specified period is 104.3%.

Industry statistics

The volume of industrial production in January-April 2026 amounted to 1032028.6 million tenge in current prices, which is 2.5% more than in January-April 2025.

In the mining and mine workings industry, production volumes decreased by 12.3%, in water supply; sanitation; waste collection, treatment and disposal, pollution elimination activities – by 5.3%. In the manufacturing industry the production amounted to increased by 7.9%, in the supply of electricity, gas, steam, hot water and air conditioned – by 7.8%.

The volume of gross output of agriculture, forestry and fisheries products (services) in January-April 2026 amounted to 65607.6 million tenge or 102.3% by January-April 2025.

The volume of cargo turnover in January-April 2026 amounted to 8014.2 million t-km (taking into account the assessment of the volume of cargo turnover of individual entrepreneurs engaged in commercial transportation), or 84.4% compared to January-April 2025.

The volume of passenger traffic – 565.2 million p-km, or 159.6% by January-April 2025.

The volume of construction works (services) amounted to 64645.3 million tenge or 104.8% compared to January-April 2025.

In January-April 2026, the total area of housing put into operation increased by 0.1% and amounted to 156.5 thousand square meters, of which in multi-apartment buildings – by 4.4% (126.7 thousand square meters). At the same time, the total area of individual residential buildings put into operation decreased by 18.1% (28.5 thousand square meters).

The volume of investments in fixed capital in January-April 2026 amounted to 162845.9 million tenge or 101.2% by January-April 2025.

The number of registered legal entities as of May 1, 2026 amounted to 14672 units and decreased by 0.3% compared to the corresponding date of the previous year, including 14297 units with less than 100 employees. The number of operating legal entities amounted to 12707 units, including 12332 units - small businesses. The number of registered small and medium enterprises (legal entities) in the region amounted to 11352 units and decreased by 0.4% compared to the corresponding date of the previous year.

Economics

The volume of gross regional product for January-December 2025 amounted to 5932830.1 million tenge at current prices. Compared to the corresponding period of 2024, real GRP increased by 108.2%. In the structure of GRP, the share of production of goods amounted to 52.5%, services – 45.6%.

The consumer price index in April 2026 compared to December 2025 was 103.6%.

Prices for food products increased by 3.7 %, non-food products – by 3.6%, paid services for the population – by 3.5%. The prices of enterprises producing industrial products in April 2026 compared to December 2025 increased by 3.4%.

The volume of retail trade in January-April 2026 amounted to 213683.7 million tenge, or 3.6% more than the corresponding period in 2025.

The volume of wholesale trade in January-April 2026 amounted to 357689.4 million tenge, or 111.7% compared to the corresponding period in 2025.

According to preliminary data, in January-March 2026, mutual trade with the EAEU countries amounted to 309.2 million US dollars and decreased by 0.3% compared to January-March 2025, including exports – 108 million US dollars (by 5.8% less), imports – 201.2 million US dollars (2.9% more).
