Summary of the socio-economic development of the region
Population size and migration

The population of the region as of April 1, 2025 amounted to 519,9 thousand people, including 258,2 thousand people (49,7%) – urban, 261.7 thousand people (50,3%) – rural residents.

The natural decline in the population in January-March 2025 amounted to -461 people (in the corresponding period of the previous year – -319 people).

The number of births as January-March 2025 amounted to 1081 people (13,8% less than in January-March 2024), the number of deaths amounted to 1542 people (2% less than in January-March 2024).

The balance of migration is negative and amounted to -1763 people (in January-March 2024 – -2290 people), including in external migration – -36 people (-1238), in internal – -1727 people (-1052).

Labor and income

The number of unemployed in the I quarter of 2025 amounted to 12,3 thousand people.

The unemployment rate was 4,5% of the labor force.

The number of persons registered with employment agencies as unemployed as of May 1, 2025 amounted to
4854 people, or 1,7% of the labor force.

The average monthly nominal wages accrued to employees (excluding small enterprises engaged in entrepreneurial activities) in the I quarter of 2025 amounted to 300051 tenge, an increase compared to the I quarter of 2024 amounted to 11%.

The real wage index in I quarter 2025 was 101%.

In the IV quarter of 2024 the average per capita nominal cash income of the population of the region, according to the estimate, amounted to 214506 tenge, which is 10,8% higher than in IV quarter 2023, the growth rate of real cash income for the specified period is 1,5%.

Industry statistics

The volume of industrial production in January-April 2025 amounted to 230672 million tenge in current prices, which is 3,7% more than in January-April 2024.

In the mining industry, production volumes increased by 20,9%, in the manufacturing industry – by 4,3%, in water supply, collection, treatment and disposal of waste, activities for the elimination of pollution – by 6,5%. In the supply of electricity, gas, steam, hot water and conditioned air, production volumes decreased by 8%.

The volume of gross output of agricultural products (services) in January-April 2025 amounted to 52671,4 million tenge, or 107,4% by January-April 2024.

The volume of cargo turnover in January-April 2025 amounted to 3300,6 million tkm (taking into account the assessment of the volume of cargo turnover of individual entrepreneurs engaged in commercial transportation), or 101,9% compared to January-April 2024.

The volume of passenger traffic – 154,8 million pkm, or 75,9% by January-April 2024.

The volume of construction works (services) amounted to 23809,6 million tenge, or 129,1% compared to January-April 2024.

In January-April 2025, the total area of commissioned housing increased by 7,6% and amounted to 44 thousand square meters, of which in individual residential buildings – 28,1% (42,7 thousand square meters). At the same time, the total area of commissioned multi-apartment buildings decreased by 82,5% (1,3 thousand square meters).

The volume of investments in fixed capital in January-April 2025 amounted to 104759 million tenge, or 90,1% by January-April 2024.

The number of registered legal entities as of May 1, 2025 amounted to 11201 units and decreased by 1,8% compared to the corresponding date of the previous year, including 10940 units with less than 100 employees. The number of operating legal entities amounted to 9213 units, including 8952 units – small businesses. The number of registered small and medium enterprises (legal entities) in the region amounted to 8372 units and decreased by 2,6% compared to the corresponding date of the previous year.

Economics

The volume of gross regional product for January-December 2024 amounted to 2653632,3 million tenge at current prices. GRP increased by 14,2 in real terms compared to the previous year. In the structure of GRP, the share of production of goods amounted to 48,5%, services – 49,4%.

The consumer price index in April 2025 compared to December 2024 was 104,6%.

Prices for food products increased by 6,2%, non-food products – by 3,3%, paid services for the population – by 4,6%. The prices of enterprises producing industrial products in April 2025 compared to December 2024 increased by 3,9%.

The volume of retail trade in January-April 2025 amounted to 125307,8 million tenge, or 1,1% more than the corresponding period in 2024.

The volume of wholesale trade in January-April 2025 amounted to 175581 million tenge, or 121,6% compared to the corresponding period in 2024.

According to preliminary data, in January-March 2025, mutual trade with the EAEU countries amounted to 127,1 million US dollars and decreased by 11,4% compared to January-March 2024, including exports – 15,4 million US dollars (by 42% less), imports – 111,7 million US dollars (4,5% less).
