Population size and migration

The population of the city as of April 1, 2025 amounted to 1264.5 thousand people.

The natural increase in the population in January-March 2025 amounted to 5046 people (in the corresponding period of the previous year – 6071 people).

The number of births in January-March 2025 amounted to 6168 people (15.2% less than in January-March 2024), the number of deaths amounted to 1122 people (7% less than in January-March 2024).

The balance of migration is positive and amounted to – 3282 people (in January-March 2024 - 3659 people), including in external migration – a positive balance of – 74 people (123), in internal – positive – 3208 people (3536).

Labor and income

The number of unemployed in the I quarter of 2025 amounted to 23.1 thousand people.

The unemployment rate was 4.8% of the labor force.

The number of persons registered with employment agencies as unemployed of May 1, 2025 amounted to 9753 people, or 2.1% of the labor force.

The average monthly nominal wages accrued to employees (excluding small enterprises engaged in entrepreneurial activities) in the I quarter of 2025 amounted to 321408 tenge, an increase compared to the I quarter of 2024 amounted to 10.5%. The real wage index in I quarter 2024 was 102.4%.

In the IV quarter of 2024 the average per capita nominal cash income of the population of the region, according to the estimate, amounted to 150369 tenge, which is 21.4% higher than in IV quarter 2023, the growth rate of real cash income for the specified period is 13%.

Industry statistics

The volume of industrial production in January-April 2025 amounted to 430690.9 million tenge in current prices, which is 23.4% more than in January-April 2024.

In water supply, collection, processing and waste disposal, pollution elimination activities a decrease production by 51.7%, in the mining industry, production volumes decreased by 19,9%.

In the manufacturing industry increased - by 26.8%, in the supply of electricity, gas, steam, hot water and conditioned air there was an increase of 6%.

The volume of gross output of agricultural products (services) in January-April 2025 amounted to 15338.7 million tenge, or 3.1% by January-April 2024.

The volume of cargo turnover in January-April 2025 amounted to 3320.1 million tkm (taking into account the assessment of the volume of cargo turnover of individual entrepreneurs engaged in commercial transportation), or 84.1% compared to January-April 2024.

The volume of passenger traffic – 1863.6 million pkm, or 112.7% compared to the level of January-April 2024.

The volume of construction works (services) amounted to 49742.7 million tenge, or 120.5% compared to January-April 2024.

In January-April 2025, the total area of housing put into operation increased by 32.5% and amounted to 323.1 thousand square meters, of which in multi-apartment buildings - by 38.4% (206.5 thousand square meters). At the same time, the total area of individual residential buildings put into operation amounted to 123.2% (116.65 thousand square meters).

The volume of investments in fixed capital in January-April 2025 amounted to 233000.8 million tenge, or 154% by January-April 2024.

The number of registered small and medium enterprises (legal entities) in the сity amounted to 26861 units and increased by 2.3% compared to the corresponding date of the previous year.

Economics

The volume of gross regional product for January-December 2024 amounted to 4407529.3 million tenge at current prices. Compared to the corresponding period of January-December 2023, real GRP increased by 7.7%. In the structure of GRP, the share of production of goods amounted to 26.7%, services – 66.2%.

The consumer price index in April 2025 compared to December 2024 was 105.4%.

Prices for food products increased by 7.5%, non-food products – by 1.8%, paid services for the population – by 6.6%.

The prices of enterprises producing industrial products in April 2025 compared to December 2024 increased by 2.6%.

The volume of retail trade in January-April 2025 amounted to 311482.9 million tenge, or 13.9% more than the corresponding period in 2024.

The volume of wholesale trade in January-April 2025 amounted to 472752 million tenge, or 124.2% compared to the corresponding period in 2024.

According to preliminary data, in January-March 2025, mutual trade with the EAEU countries amounted to 119 million US dollars and decreased by 22.1% compared to January-March 2024, including exports – 23.8 million US dollars (by 14.8% less), imports – 95.2 million US dollars (23.7% less).
