Population size and migration

The population of Zhambyl region as of May 1, 2025 amounted to 1220,6 thousand people, including 536,9 thousand people (44%) – urban, 683,7 thousand people (56%) – rural residents.

The natural increase in the population in January-April 2025 amounted to 4636 people (in the corresponding period of the previous year – 5647 people).

The number of births as January-April 2025 amounted to 6967 people (14,1% less than in January-April 2024), the number of deaths amounted to 2331 people (5,5% less than in January-April 2024).

The balance of migration is negative and amounted to -6416 people (in January-April 2024 – -5082 people), including in external migration – a negative balance of – -59 people (-72), in internal migration – -6357 people (-5010).

Labor and income

The number of unemployed in the I quarter of 2025 amounted to 26152 people.

The unemployment rate was 4,8% of the labor force. The number of persons registered with employment agencies as unemployed as of June 1, 2025 amounted to 23754 people or 4,4% of the labor force.

The average monthly nominal wages accrued to employees (excluding small enterprises engaged in entrepreneurial activities) in the I quarter of 2025 amounted to 308891 tenge, an increase compared to the I quarter of 2024 amounted to 9,5%.

The real wage index in I quarter 2025 was 101,6%.

In the IV quarter of 2024 the average per capita nominal cash income of the population of the region, according to the estimate, amounted to 151958 tenge, which is 13,3% higher than in IV quarter 2023, the growth rate of real cash income for the specified period is 104,4%.

Industry statistics

The volume of industrial production in January-May 2025 amounted to 507036,3 million tenge in current prices, which is 22,9% more than in January-May 2024.

In the mining industry, production volumes increased by 47,9%, in the manufacturing industry increased by 17,1%, in the supply of electricity, gas, steam, hot water and conditioned air there increase by 16,1%, in water supply; sanitation; waste collection, treatment anddisposal, pollution elimination activities has been noted increase by 7%.

The volume of gross output of agricultural products (services) in January-May 2025 amounted to 70574 million tenge or 100,9% by January-May 2024.

The volume of cargo turnover in January-May 2025 amounted to 16447,9 million tkm (taking into account the assessment of the volume of cargo turnover of individual entrepreneurs engaged in commercial transportation) or 93,8% to January-May 2024.

The volume of passenger traffic 776,8 million pkm or 90,7% by January-May 2024.

The volume of construction works (services) amounted to 75671,8 million tenge or 134,8% by January-May 2024.

In January-May 2025, the total area of housing put into operation increased by 2,9% and amounted to 222,1 thousand square meters, of which in multi-apartment buildings increased by 10,5% (64,7 thousand square meters). In this case the total area of commissioned individual residential buildings decreased by 0,6% (155,5 thousand square meters).

The volume of investments in fixed capital in January-May 2025 amounted to 245548,3 million tenge or 157,5% by January-May 2024.

The number of registered legal entities as of June 1, 2025 amounted to 15350 units and increased by 0,6% compared to the corresponding date of the previous year, including 14944 units with less than 100 employees. The number of operating legal entities amounted to 12088 units, including 11683 units – small businesses. The number of registered small and medium enterprises (legal entities) in the region amounted to 12168 units and not changed compared to the corresponding date of the previous year.

Economics

The volume of gross regional product for January-December 2024 amounted to 3236800,3 million tenge at current prices. Compared to the previous year real GRP increased by 4,5%. In the structure of GRP, the share of production of goods amounted to 33,5%, services – 64,6%.

The consumer price index in May 2025 compared to December 2024 was 105,4%.

Prices for paid services for the population increased by 6,9%, food products by 6,3%, non-food products – by 3,1%.  

The prices of enterprises producing industrial products in May 2025 compared to December 2024 increased by 6,8%.

The volume of retail trade in January-May 2025 amounted to 201618 million tenge or 2,3% more than the corresponding period in 2024.

The volume of wholesale trade in January-May 2025 amounted to 141087,5 million tenge or 103,6% compared to the corresponding period in 2024.

According to preliminary data, in January-April 2025 mutual trade with the EAEU countries amounted to 105,9 million US dollars and increased by 51,4% compared to January-April 2024, including exports – 38,2 million US dollars (50,1% more), imports – 67,7 million US dollars (52,1% more).
