Population size and migration

The population of the city of Astana as of March 1, 2026 was 1655369 people.

The natural population growth in January-February 2026 amounted to 3150 people (in the corresponding period of the previous year - 3115 people). In January-February 2026, the number of newborns increased by 0.6% compared to January-February 2025, while the number of deaths decreased by 1.1%.

The migration balance is positive and amounted to 13043 people (in January-February 2025 – 12324 people), including 386 in external migration (172 people ), in internal 12657 people (12152 people).

Labor and income

The number of unemployed in the IV quarter of 2025 amounted to 34283 people.

The unemployment rate was 4.3% of the labor force.

The number of persons registered with employment agencies as unemployed as of 1 February 2026 amounted to 6 048 people.

The average monthly nominal wages accrued to employees (excluding small enterprises engaged in entrepreneurial activities) in the IV quarter of 2025 amounted to 659610 tenge.

The real wage index in IV quarter of 2025 compared to the corresponding quarter of 2024 was 96.9%.

In the ІV quarter of 2025 the average per capita nominal cash income of the population of the region, according to the estimate, amounted to 371303 tenge, which is 12.4% higher than in 2024, the decrease rate of real cash income for the specified period is 0.3%.

Industry statistics

The volume of industrial production in January-March, 2026 amounted to 986986.3 million tenge in current prices, which is 15.9% more than in January-March, 2025.

In the manufacturing industry increased by 14.8%, in the supply of electricity, gas, steam, hot water and conditioned air increased by 27.5%, in water supply, collection, processing and waste disposal, pollution elimination activities increased by 42.9%.

The volume of gross output of agricultural, forestry and fishery products (services) in January-March, 2026 amounted to 803.9 million tenge, or 100.1% compared to January-March, 2025.

The volume of cargo turnover in January-March 2026 amounted to – 11848.4 million tkm (taking into account the assessment of the volume of cargo turnover of individual entrepreneurs engaged in commercial transportation), or 102% compared in January-March 2025.

The volume of passenger traffic – 3919 million pkm, or 94.3% by in January-March 2025.

The volume of construction works (services) amounted to 200.9 billion tenge, or 108.9% compared to January-March 2025.

In January-March 2026, the total area of housing put into operation increased by 1.6% and amounted to 1083.5 thousand square meters, of which in multi-apartment buildings - by 0.8% (1055.9 thousand square meters). At the same time, the total area of individual residential buildings put into operation increased 50.3% (27.6 thousand square meters).

The volume of investments in fixed capital in January-March 2026 amounted to 413.7 billion tenge, or 101.2% by January-March 2025.

The number of registered legal entities as of 1 April 2026 amounted to 107787 units and increased by 2.9% compared to the corresponding date of the previous year, including 106859 units with less than 100 employees. The number of operating legal entities amounted to 81154 units, including 80230 units - small businesses. The number of registered small and medium enterprises (legal entities) in the town amounted to 95979 units and increased by 1.5% compared to the corresponding date of the previous year.

Economics

The volume of gross regional product for January-September 2025 amounted 11550174.2 million tenge at current prices. Compared to the corresponding period of January-September 2024, real GRP increased by 11,5%. In the structure of GRP, the share of production of goods amounted to 15.6%, services – 77.1%.

The consumer price index in March 2026 against March 2025 was 109.3%. Prices for food products increased by 11.3%, non-food products – by 11.1%, paid services for the population – by 7%.

The prices of enterprises producing industrial products in March 2026 increased by 5.6% compared to March 2025.

The volume of retail trade in January-March 2026 amounted to 666057.1 million tenge, which is 102.5% compared to January-March 2025.

The volume of wholesale trade in January-March 2026 amounted to 1613829.2 million tenge, which is 102.4% compared to January-March 2025.

According to preliminary data, in January-February 2026, mutual trade with the EAEU countries amounted to 900 million US dollars and increased by 26.6% to January-February 2025, including exports – 95.8 million US dollars (by 36.2% less), imports – 804.2 million US dollars (43.4% more).
