Population size and migration

The population of the city of Astana as of August 1, 2026 was 1690605 people.

The natural population growth in January-July 2026 amounted to 11879 people (in the corresponding period of the previous year - 11760 people). In January-July 2026, the number of newborns was 1.7% more than in January-July 2025, deaths - by 4.1% more.

The migration balance is positive and amounted to 39550 people (in January-July 2025 - 48104 people), including 725 in external migration (900 people), in internal 38825 people (47204 people).

Labor

The number of unemployed in the II quarter of 2026 amounted to 34053 people.

The unemployment rate was 4.2% of the labor force.

The number of persons registered with employment agencies as unemployed as of 1 April 2026 amounted to 5534 people.

The average monthly nominal wages accrued to employees (excluding small enterprises engaged in entrepreneurial activities) in the II quarter of 2026 amounted to 647920 tenge.

The real wage index in II quarter of 2026 compared to the corresponding quarter of 2025 was 99%.

Industry statistics

The volume of industrial production in January-August 2026 amounted to 2810664.6 million tenge in current prices, which is 11% more than in January-August, 2025.

In the manufacturing industry increased by 8.3%, in the supply of electricity, gas, steam, hot water and air conditioned increased by 44.3%, in water supply, collection, processing and waste disposal, pollution elimination activities increased by 52.4%.

The volume of gross output of agricultural, forestry and fishery products (services) in January-August, 2026 amounted to 2110.2 million tenge, or 98.8% compared to January-August, 2025.

The volume of freight turnover in January-August 2026 amounted to 28686,8 million tkm (taking into account the estimated volume of freight turnover of individual entrepreneurs engaged in commercial transportation), or 105.2% against January-August 2025.

The volume of passenger traffic is 12048,2 million pkm, or 98,8% against January-August 2025.

The volume of construction works (services) amounted to 894.4 billion tenge, or 113.4% compared to January-August 2025.

In January-August 2026, the total area of housing put into operation increased by 2.5% and amounted to 2715.2 thousand square meters, of which in multi-apartment buildings - by 4.7% (2663,8 thousand square meters). At the same time, the total area of individual residential buildings put into operation increased 31.7% (51.4 thousand square meters).

The volume of investments in fixed capital in January-August 2026 amounted to 1515,2 billion tenge, or 102.7% by January-August 2025.

The number of registered legal entities as of September 1, 2026 amounted to 105547 units and decreased by 2% compared to the corresponding date of the previous year, including 104664 units with less than 100 employees. The number of operating legal entities amounted to 83600 units, including 82719 units - small businesses. The number of registered small and medium enterprises (legal entities) in the city amounted to 92713 units and decreased by 4.2% compared to the corresponding date of the previous year.

Economics

The volume of gross regional product for January-March 2026 amounted to 4248346 million tenge at current prices. Compared to the corresponding period of January-March 2025, real GRP increased by 8.9%. In the structure of GRP, the share of production of goods amounted to 19.5%, services – 69.7%.

The consumer price index in August 2026 against August 2025 was 109.8%. Prices for food products increased by 8.8%, non-food products – by 11.1%, paid services for the population – by 10.1%.

The prices of enterprises producing industrial products in August 2026 increased by 6.3% compared to August 2025.

The volume of retail trade in January-August 2026 amounted to 2386609.3 million tenge, which is 104.9% compared to January-August 2025.

The volume of wholesale trade in January-August 2026 amounted to 4899722 million tenge, which is 101.9% compared to January-August 2025.

According to preliminary data, in January-July 2026, mutual trade with the EAEU countries amounted to 3533.5 million US dollars and increased by 22,8% to January-July 2025, including exports – 424.4 million US dollars (by 7.8% less), imports – 3109 million US dollars (28.6% more).
