Population size and migration

The population of the city of Astana as of July 1, 2026 was 1682721 people.

The natural population growth in January-June 2026 amounted to 10157 people (in the corresponding period of the previous year - 10011 people). In January-June 2026, the number of newborns increased by 1.9% than in January-June 2025, deaths - by 3.3% more.

The migration balance is positive and amounted to 33388 people (in January-June 2025 - 37623 people), including 723 in external migration (802 people), in internal 32665 people (36821 people).

Labor

The number of unemployed in the II quarter of 2026 amounted to 34053 people.

The unemployment rate was 4.2% of the labor force.

The number of persons registered with employment agencies as unemployed as of 1 April 2026 amounted to 5534 people.

The average monthly nominal wages accrued to employees (excluding small enterprises engaged in entrepreneurial activities) in the I quarter of 2026 amounted to 609725 tenge.

The real wage index in I quarter of 2026 compared to the corresponding quarter of 2025 was 98.1%.

Industry statistics

The volume of industrial production in January-July 2026 amounted to 2547197.4 million tenge in current prices, which is 11.3% more than in January-July, 2025.

In the manufacturing industry increased by 9.7%, in the supply of electricity, gas, steam, hot water and air conditioned increased by 31.4%, in water supply, collection, processing and waste disposal, pollution elimination activities increased by 35.6%.

The volume of gross output of agricultural, forestry and fishery products (services) in January-July, 2026 amounted to 1806.6 million tenge, or 98.7% compared to January-July, 2025.

                The volume of freight turnover in January-July 2026 amounted to 25101,7 million tkm (taking into account the estimated volume of freight turnover of individual entrepreneurs engaged in commercial transportation), or 106.5% against January-July 2025.

                The volume of passenger traffic is 10163,6 million pkm, or 97,6% against January-July 2025.

                The volume of construction works (services) amounted to 708.2 billion tenge, or 103.4% compared to January-July 2025.

                In January-July 2026, the total area of housing put into operation increased by 0.5% and amounted to 2201 thousand square meters, of which in multi-apartment buildings - by 3.1% (2153.1 thousand square meters). At the same time, the total area of individual residential buildings put into operation increased by 36.1% (47.9 thousand square meters).

                The volume of investments in fixed capital in January-July 2026 amounted to 1294.7 billion tenge, or 102.7% by January-July 2025.

                The number of registered legal entities as of 1 August 2026 amounted to 104994 units and decreased by 2% compared to the corresponding date of the previous year, including 104122 units with less than 100 employees. The number of operating legal entities amounted to 82478 units, including 81608 units - small businesses. The number of registered small and medium enterprises (legal entities) in the city amounted to 92383 units and decreased by 4.1% compared to the corresponding date of the previous year.

Economics

The volume of gross regional product for January-March 2026 amounted to 4248346 million tenge at current prices. Compared to the corresponding period of January-March 2025, real GRP increased by 8.9%. In the structure of GRP, the share of production of goods amounted to 19.5%, services – 69.7%.

The consumer price index in July 2026 against July 2025 was 109.8%. Prices for food products increased by 9.4%, non-food products – by 11.1%, paid services for the population – by 9.7%.

The prices of enterprises producing industrial products in July 2026 increased by 6.2% compared to July 2025.

The volume of retail trade in January-July 2026 amounted to 1979482.7 million tenge, which is 104% compared to January- July 2025.

The volume of wholesale trade in January-July 2026 amounted to 4134657.8 million tenge, which is 101% compared to January-July 2025.

According to preliminary data, in January-June 2026, mutual trade with the EAEU countries amounted to 2975.6 million US dollars and increased by 22,9% to January- June 2025, including exports – 323.2 million US dollars (by 18,7% less), imports – 2652.4 million US dollars (31% more).
