Population size and migration

The population of the city of Astana as of May 1, 2026 was 1668750 people.

The natural population growth in January-April 2026 amounted to 6652 people (in the corresponding period of the previous year - 6452 people). In January-April 2026, newborns were by 2.4% more than in January-April 2025, deaths - by 0.2% more.

The migration balance is positive and amounted to 22922 people (in January-April 2025 - 23346 people), including 691 in external migration (535 people), in internal 22231 people (22811 people).

Labor and income

The number of unemployed in the I quarter of 2026 amounted to 34384 people.

The unemployment rate was 4.3% of the labor force.

The number of persons registered with employment agencies as unemployed as of April 1, 2026 amounted to 5534 people.

The average monthly nominal wages accrued to employees (excluding small enterprises engaged in entrepreneurial activities) in the I quarter of 2026 amounted to 609725 tenge.

The real wage index in I quarter of 2026 compared to the corresponding quarter of 2025 is 98.1%.

In the ІV quarter of 2025 the average per capita nominal cash income of the population of the region, according to the estimate, amounted to 371303 tenge, which is 12.4% higher than in 2024, the decrease rate of real cash income for the specified period is 0.3%.

Industry statistics

The volume of industrial production in January-May 2026 amounted to 1612446.9 million tenge in current prices, which is 11.5% more than in January-May, 2025.

In the manufacturing industry increased by 10.2%, in the supply of electricity, gas, steam, hot water and conditioned increased by 27.1%, in water supply, collection, processing and waste disposal, pollution elimination activities increased by 35.6%.

The volume of gross output of agricultural, forestry and fishery products (services) in January-May, 2026 amounted to 1287.0 million tenge, or 100.1% compared to January- May, 2025.

The volume of freight turnover in January-May 2026 amounted to 18212.2 million tkm (taking into account the estimated volume of freight turnover of individual entrepreneurs engaged in commercial transportation), or 92.7% against January-May 2025.

The volume of passenger traffic is 6557.4 million pkm, or 94.2% against January-May 2025.

The volume of construction works (services) amounted to 359.2 billion tenge, or 109.2% compared to January-May 2025.

In January-May 2026, the total area of housing put into operation increased by 3.9% and amounted to 1564.1 thousand square meters, of which in multi-apartment buildings - by 4.5% (1526,7 thousand square meters). At the same time, the total area of individual residential buildings put into operation increased 38.1% (37.3 thousand square meters).

The volume of investments in fixed capital in January-May 2026 amounted to 833.5 billion tenge, or 111.2% by January-May 2025.

The number of registered legal entities as of 1 June 2026 amounted to 104251 units and decreased by 1.6% compared to the corresponding date of the previous year, including 103349 units with less than 100 employees. The number of operating legal entities amounted to 81851 units, including 80951 units - small businesses. The number of registered small and medium enterprises (legal entities) in the town amounted to 92107 units and decreased by 3.5% compared to the corresponding date of the previous year.

Economics

The volume of gross regional product for January-December 2025 amounted 18928077,1 million tenge at current prices. Compared to the corresponding period of January- December 2024, real GRP increased by 11,6%. In the structure of GRP, the share of production of goods amounted to 17.1%, services – 76.7%.

The consumer price index in May 2026 against May 2025 was 109.4%.Prices for food products increased by 10.7%, non-food products – by 11.4%, paid services for the population – by 7.7%.

The prices of enterprises producing industrial products in May 2026 increased by 6.7% compared to May 2025.

The volume of retail trade in January-May 2026 amounted to 1197245.3 million tenge, which is 103.1% compared to January-May 2025.

The volume of wholesale trade in January-May 2026 amounted to 2771122.9 million tenge, which is 102% compared to January-May 2025.

 According to preliminary data, in January-April 2026, mutual trade with the EAEU countries amounted to 2035.8 million US dollars and increased by 36% to January-April 2025, including exports – 198.3 million US dollars (by 37.5% less), imports – 1837.5 million US dollars (55.8% more).
