Population size and migration

The population of Astana city as of April 1, 2026 was 1662755 people.

The natural population growth in January-March 2026 amounted to 4815 people (in the corresponding period of the previous year – 4656 people). In January-March 2026, newborns deaths were by 3.6% more than in January-March 2025, deaths – by 4.3% more.

The migration balance is positive and amounted to 18764 people (in January-March 2025 – 17854 people), including 611 in external migration (275 people), in internal 18153 people (17579 people).

Labor and income

The number of unemployed in the I quarter of 2026 amounted to 34384 people.

The unemployment rate was 4.3% of the labor force.

The number of persons registered with employment agencies as unemployed as of April 1, 2026 amounted to 5534 people.

The average monthly nominal wages accrued to employees (excluding small enterprises engaged in entrepreneurial activities) in the I quarter of 2026 amounted to 609725 tenge.

The real wage index in I quarter of 2026 compared to the corresponding quarter of 2025 is 98.1%.

In the ІV quarter of 2025 the average per capita nominal cash income of the population of the region, according to the estimate, amounted to 371303 tenge, which is 12.4% higher than in 2024, the rate of real cash income for the specified period decrease 0.3%.

Industry statistics

The volume of industrial production in January-April, 2026 amounted to 1301518 million tenge in current prices, which is 16.5% more than in January-April, 2025.

In the manufacturing industry increased by 15.7%, in the supply of electricity, gas, steam, hot water and conditioned increased by 24%, in water supply, collection, processing and waste disposal, pollution elimination activities increased by 46.9%.

The volume of gross output of agricultural, forestry and fishery products (services) in January-April, 2026 amounted to 1050 million tenge, or 100.1% compared to January-April, 2025.

The volume of freight turnover in January-April 2026 amounted to 14551,3 million tkm (taking into account the estimated volume of freight turnover of individual entrepreneurs engaged in commercial transportation), or 93.1% against January-April 2025.

The volume of passenger traffic is 5 157.3 million pkm, or 93.9% against January-April 2025.

The volume of construction works (services) amounted to 259 billion tenge, or 108.2% compared to January-April 2025.

 In January-April 2026, the total area of housing put into operation increased by 3.5% and amounted to 1413.2 thous and square meters, of which in multi-apartment buildings - by 2.8% (1380.7 thousand square meters). At the same time, the total area of individual residential buildings put into operation increased 46.8% (32.5 thousand square meters).

The volume of investments in fixed capital in January-April 2026 amounted to 587.9 billion tenge, or 109.1% by January-April 2025.

The number of registered legal entities as of May 1, 2026 amounted to 103634 units and decreased by 1.7% compared to the corresponding date of the previous year, including 102727 units with less than 100 employees. The number of operating legal entities amounted to 81451 units, including 80547 units – small businesses. The number of registered small and medium enterprises (legal entities) in the town amounted to 91647 units and decreased by 3.6% compared to the corresponding date of the previous year.

Economics

The volume of gross regional product for January-December 2025 amounted 18928077,1 million tenge at current prices. Compared to the corresponding period of January- December 2024, real GRP increased by 11,6%. In the structure of GRP, the share of production of goods amounted to 17.1%, services – 76.7%.

The consumer price index in April 2026 against April 2025 was 108.8%. Prices for food products increased by 10.5%, non-food products – by 11.4%, paid services for the population – by 6.4%.

The prices of enterprises producing industrial products in April 2026 increased by 6.4% compared to April 2025.

The volume of retail trade in January-April 2026 amounted to 931936.3 million tenge, which is 102.6% compared to January-April 2025.

The volume of wholesale trade in January-April 2026 amounted to 2161226.5 million tenge, which is 102.6% compared to January-April 2025.

According to preliminary data, in January-March 2026, mutual trade with the EAEU countries amounted to 1542.8 million US dollars and increased by 38.1% to January-March 2025, including exports – 143.2 million US dollars (by 43.6% less), imports – 1399.7 million US dollars (62.1% more).
