Population size and migration

The population of the city of Astana as of June 1, 2026 was 1674699 people.

The natural population growth in January-May 2026 amounted to 8256 people (in the corresponding period of the previous year - 8257 people). In January-May 2026, the number of newborns was 0.02% higher than in January-May 2025, deaths - by 0.1% more.

The migration balance is positive and amounted to 27267 people (in January-May 2025 - 29606 people), including 720 in external migration (659 people), in internal 26547 people (28947 people).

Labor

The number of unemployed in the I quarter of 2026 amounted to 34384 people.

The unemployment rate was 4.3% of the labor force.

The number of persons registered with employment agencies as unemployed as of 1 July 2026 amounted to 5365 people.

The average monthly nominal wages accrued to employees (excluding small enterprises engaged in entrepreneurial activities) in the I quarter of 2026 amounted to 609725 tenge.

The real wage index in I quarter of 2026 compared to the corresponding quarter of 2025 was 98.8%.

Industry statistics

The volume of industrial production in January-June 2026 amounted to 2256108.5 million tenge in current prices, which is 11.9% more than in January-June, 2025.

In the manufacturing industry increased by 10.6%, in the supply of electricity, gas, steam, hot water and air conditioning increased by 28.6%, in water supply, collection, processing and waste disposal, pollution elimination activities increased by 30%.

The volume of gross output of agricultural, forestry and fishery products (services) in January-June, 2026 amounted to 1534.4 million tenge, or 100.1% compared to January-June, 2025.

The volume of freight turnover in January-June 2026 amounted to 21669.3 million tkm (taking into account the estimated volume of freight turnover of individual entrepreneurs engaged in commercial transportation), or 108.5% against January- June 2025.

The volume of passenger traffic is 8291.5 million pkm, or 96.5% against January-June 2025.

The volume of construction works (services) amounted to 544.3 billion tenge, or 103.3% compared to January-June 2025.

In January-June 2026, the total area of housing put into operation increased by 5.9% and amounted to 1881.0 thousand square meters, of which in multi-apartment buildings - by 9.7% (1840.7 thousand square meters). At the same time, the total area of individual residential buildings put into operation increased 25.3% (40.3 thousand square meters).

The volume of investments in fixed capital in January-June 2026 amounted to 1085 billion tenge, or 107.2% by January-June 2025.

The number of registered legal entities as of 1 July 2026 amounted to 104464 units and decreased by 2% compared to the corresponding date of the previous year, including 103 587 units with less than 100 employees. The number of operating legal entities amounted to 82087 units, including 81212 units - small businesses. The number of registered small and medium enterprises (legal entities) in the city amounted to 92090 units and decreased by 4% compared to the corresponding date of the previous year.

Economics

The volume of gross regional product for January-March 2026 amounted 4248346 million tenge at current prices. Compared to the corresponding period of January-March 2025, real GRP increased by 8.9%. In the structure of GRP, the share of production of goods amounted to 19.5%, services – 69.7%.

The consumer price index in June 2026 against June 2025 was 109.8%. Prices for food products increased by 9.9%, non-food products – by 11.3%, paid services for the population – by 9.2%.

The prices of enterprises producing industrial products in June 2026 increased by 6.3% compared to June 2025.

The volume of retail trade in January-June 2026 amounted to 1582800.4 million tenge, which is 103.4% compared to January- June 2025.

The volume of wholesale trade in January-June 2026 amounted to 3495643 million tenge, which is 102.2% compared to January-June 2025.

According to preliminary data, in January-May 2026, mutual trade with the EAEU countries amounted to 2521.1 million US dollars and increased by 33.2% to January-May 2025, including exports – 251.5 million US dollars (by 33.9% less), imports – 2269.6 million US dollars (50.1% more).
