Population size and migration

The population of the city of Astana as of May 1, 2025 was 1558501 people.

The natural population growth in January-April 2025 amounted to 6452 people (in the corresponding period of the previous year - 7556 people). In January-April 2025, the number of newborns deaths by 11.3% less than in January-April 2024, deaths increased by 1.8%.

The migration balance is positive and amounted to 23346 people (in January-April 2024 - 20419 people), including 535 in external migration (653 people ), in internal 22811 people (19766 people).

Labor and income

The number of unemployed in the I quarter of 2025 amounted to 33850 people.

The unemployment rate was 4.4% of the labor force.

The number of persons registered with employment agencies as unemployed as of 1 May 2025 amounted to 5077 people.

The average monthly nominal wages accrued to employees (excluding small enterprises engaged in entrepreneurial activities) in the I quarter of 2025 amounted to 563309 tenge.

The real wage index in I quarter of 2025 compared to the corresponding quarter of 2024 was 101.4%.

In the ІV quarter of 2024 the average per capita nominal cash income of the population of the region, according to the estimate, amounted to 331276 tenge, which is 11% higher than in 2023, the increase rate of real cash income for the specified period is 0.5%.

Industry statistics

The volume of industrial production in January-May 2025 amounted to 1047582.4 million tenge in current prices, which is 2.5% more than in January-May 2024.

In the manufacturing industry - increased by 4.6%, in the supply of electricity, gas, steam, hot water and conditioned air decreased by 16.1%, in water supply, collection, processing and waste disposal, pollution elimination activities - decreased by 14.2%.

The volume of gross output of agricultural, forestry and fishery products (services) in January-May 2025 amounted to 1488.1 million tenge, or 99.3% by January-May 2024.

The volume of cargo turnover in January-May 2025 amounted to – 19640.4 million tkm (taking into account the assessment of the volume of cargo turnover of individual entrepreneurs engaged in commercial transportation), or 121.9% compared to January-May 2024.

The volume of passenger traffic – 6960.7 million pkm, or 98.1% by January-May 2024.

The volume of construction works (services) amounted to 307.7 billion tenge, or 151.8% compared to January-May 2024.

In January-May 2025, the total area of housing put into operation increased by 5.6% and amounted to 1505.4 thousand square meters, of which in multi-apartment buildings - by 4.4% (1461,6 thousand square meters). At the same time, the total area of individual residential buildings put into operation increased 9.4% (27 thousand square meters).

The volume of investments in fixed capital in January-May 2025 amounted to 705.4 billion tenge, or 147.4% by January-May 2024.

The number of registered legal entities as of 1 June 2025 amounted to 105932 units and increased by 3.6% compared to the corresponding date of the previous year, including 105050 units with less than 100 employees.

The number of operating legal entities amounted to 75366 units, including 74487 units - small businesses. The number of registered small and medium enterprises (legal entities) in the town amounted to 95460 units and increased by 2.4% compared to the corresponding date of the previous year.

Economics

The volume of gross regional product for January-December 2024 amounted to 15484516.7 million tenge at current prices. Compared to the corresponding period of January - December 2023, real GRP increased by 8%. In the structure of GRP, the share of production of goods amounted to 13.9%, services – 79.7%.

The consumer price index in January-May 2025 against January-May 2024 was 12.8%.

Prices for paid services for the population increased by 18.3%, non-food products – by 9.1%, food products - by 8%.

The prices of enterprises producing industrial products in January-May 2025 decreased by 3.2% compared to January-May 2024.

The volume of retail trade in January-May 2025 amounted to 1041624.7 million tenge, or 13.3% more than the corresponding period in 2024.

The volume of wholesale trade in January-May 2025 amounted to 2544860.5 million tenge, or 108.2% compared to the corresponding period in 2024.

According to preliminary data, in January- April 2025, mutual trade with the EAEU countries amounted to 1431.6 million US dollars and increased by 14.6% decreased to January-April 2024, including exports – 281.3 million US dollars (by 40.7% less), imports – 1150.3 million US dollars (4.2% less).
