Population size and migration

The population in the city of Almaty as of April 1, 2025 amounted to 2305,8 thousand people.

The natural increase in the population in January-March 2025 amounted to 4415 people (in the corresponding period of the previous year – 5527 people).

The number of births as January-March 2025 amounted to 7392 people (13,1% less than in January-March 2024), the number of deaths amounted to 2977 people (0,2% less than in January-March 2024).

The balance of migration is positive and amounted to 9295 people (in January-March 2024 – 10620 people), including in external migration - a positive balance of - 570 people (1433), in internal – positive – 8725 people (9187).

Labor and income

The number of unemployed in the I quarter of 2025 amounted to 52,6 thousand people.

The unemployment rate was 4,5% of the labor force.

The number of persons registered with employment agencies as unemployed as of May 1, 2025 amounted to 29799 people, or 2,5% of the labor force.

The average monthly nominal wages accrued to employees (excluding small enterprises engaged in entrepreneurial activities) in the I quarter of 2025 amounted to 518857 tenge, an increase compared to the I quarter of 2024 amounted to 14,2%.

The real wage index in I quarter 2025 was 104%.

In the IV quarter of 2024 the average per capita nominal cash income of the population, according to the estimate, amounted to 387304 tenge, which is 22,2% higher than in IV quarter 2023, the growth rate of real cash income for the specified period is 11,9%.

Industry statistics

The volume of industrial production in January-April 2025 amounted to 795756 million tenge in current prices, which is 15% more than in January-April 2024.

In the manufacturing industry production volumes increased by 17,6%, a decrease in the supply of electricity, gas, steam, hot water and conditioned air - by 2,4% and an increase in water supply, collection, processing and waste disposal, pollution elimination activities - by 4,1%.

The volume of gross output of agricultural products (services) in January-April 2025 amounted to 1039,8 million tenge, or 96,7% by January-April 2024.

The volume of cargo turnover in January-April 2025 amounted to 7206,8 million t-km (taking into account the assessment of the volume of cargo turnover of individual entrepreneurs engaged in commercial transportation), or 107,1% compared to January-April 2024.

The volume of passenger turnover in January-April 2025 amounted to 7059,6 million p-km, or 124,3% by January-April 2024.

The volume of construction works (services) amounted to 146688,1 million tenge, or 121,3% compared to January-April 2024.

In January-April 2025, the total area of housing put into operation increased by 23,7% and amounted to 915,9 thousand square meters, of which in multi-apartment buildings - by 34,1% (808,5 thousand square meters). At the same time, the total area of individual residential buildings put into operation decreased by 21,9% (107,4 thousand square meters).

The volume of investments in fixed capital in January-April 2025 amounted to 541288,2 million tenge, or 135,6% by January- April 2024.

The number of registered legal entities as of May 1, 2025 amounted to 153617 units and increased by 2,3% compared to the corresponding date of the previous year, including 151884 units with less than 100 employees. The number of operating legal entities amounted to 113012 units, including 111372 units - small businesses. The number of registered small and medium enterprises (legal entities) in the city amounted to 143937 units and increased by 2,5% compared to the corresponding date of the previous year.

Economics

The volume of gross regional product for January-December 2024 (according to preliminary data) amounted to 29240856,9 million tenge at current prices. Compared to the corresponding period in 2023, real GRP increased by 5,6%. In the structure of GRP, the share of production of goods amounted to 6,5%, services – 85,7%.

The consumer price index in April 2025 compared to December 2024 was 105,2%.

Prices for food products increased by 4%, non-food products – by 2,5%, paid services for the population – by 8,3%.

The prices of enterprises producing industrial products in April 2025 compared to December 2024 increased by 3,9%.

The volume of retail trade in January-April 2025 amounted to 1970422,1 million tenge, or 7,7% more than the corresponding period in 2024.

The volume of wholesale trade in January-April 2025 amounted to 4943168,3 million tenge, or 102,2% compared to the corresponding period in 2024.

According to preliminary data, in January-March 2025, mutual trade with the EAEU countries amounted to 1803,2 million US dollars and increased by 6,6% compared to January-March 2024, including exports – 505 million US dollars (by 5,6% increased ), imports – 1298,2 million US dollars(by 7% increased).
