Population size and migration

The population in the city of Almaty as of December 1, 2024 amounted to 2286,3 thousand people.

The natural increase in the population in January-November 2024 amounted to 20624 people (in the corresponding period of the previous year – 21749 people).

The number of births as January-November 2024 amounted to 31699 people (2,6% less than in January- November 2023), the number of deaths amounted to 11075 people (2,6% more than in January- November 2023).

The balance of migration is positive and amounted to 37029 people (in January- November 2023 – 39131 people), including in external migration - a positive  balance of - 4677  people (4601), in internal – positive – 32352 people (34530).

Labor and income

The number of unemployed in the III quarter of 2024 amounted to 52 thousand people.

The unemployment rate was 4,6% of the labor force.

The number of persons registered with employment agencies as unemployed as of January 1, 2025 amounted to 12625 people, or 1,1% of the labor force.

The average monthly nominal wages accrued to employees (excluding small enterprises engaged in entrepreneurial activities) in the III quarter of 2024 amounted to 471264 tenge, an increase compared to the III quarter of 2023 amounted to 15,2%.

The real wage index in III quarter 2024 was 106,2%.

In the III quarter of 2024 the average per capita nominal cash income of the population, according to the estimate, amounted to 338663 tenge, which is 20,6% higher than in III quarter 2023, the growth rate of real cash income for the specified period is 11,2%.

Industry statistics

The volume of industrial production in January-December 2024 amounted to 2083185,3 million tenge in current prices, which is 1,9% less than in 2023.

In the manufacturing industry production volumes decreased by 1,3%,  in the supply of electricity, gas, steam, hot water and conditioned air - by 6% and in water supply, collection, processing and waste disposal, pollution elimination activities - by 7,8%.

The volume of gross output of agricultural products (services) in January-December 2024 amounted to 7462,5 million tenge, or  145,7% by 2023.

The volume of cargo turnover in January-December 2024 amounted to 23656,9 million t-km (taking into account the assessment of the volume of cargo turnover of individual entrepreneurs engaged in commercial transportation), or 124,2% compared to January-December 2023.

The volume of passenger turnover in January-December 2024 amounted to 18937,8 million p-km, or 117%  by January-December 2023.

The volume of construction works (services) amounted to 732166,5 million tenge, or 117% by 2023.

In January-December 2024, the total area of housing put into operation decrease by 10,3% and amounted to 2402,7 thousand square meters, of which in multi-apartment buildings - by 12,4% (1972,7 thousand square meters). At the same time, the total area of individual residential buildings put info operation increase by 1,9% (416,9 thousand square meters).

The volume of investments in fixed capital in January-December 2024 amounted to 1987225,2 million tenge, or 108,2% by 2023.

The number of registered legal entities as of January 1, 2025 amounted to 151787 units and increased by 2,4% compared to the corresponding date of the previous year, including 149998  units with less than 100 employees. The number of operating legal entities amounted to 114832 units, including 113131 units - small businesses. The number of registered small and medium enterprises (legal entities) in the city amounted to 142107 units and increased by 2,7% compared to the corresponding date of the previous year.

Economics

The volume of gross regional product for January-September 2024 amounted to 16429880,3 million tenge at current prices. Compared to the corresponding period in 2023, real GRP increased by 3.8%. In the structure of GRP, the share of production of goods amounted to 6,5%, services – 86,8%.

The consumer price index in December 2024 compared to December 2023 was 109,2%.

Prices for food products increased by 6,8%, non-food products – by 6,7%, paid services for the population – by 13,6%. The prices of enterprises producing industrial products in December 2024 compared to December 2023 increased by 6,9%.

The volume of retail trade in January-December 2024 amounted to 7545644,5 million tenge, or 12,8% more than the corresponding period in 2023.

The volume of wholesale trade in January-December 2024 amounted to 17317917,3 million tenge, or 106,8% compared to the corresponding period in 2023.

According to preliminary data, in January-November 2024, mutual trade with the EAEU countries amounted to 6600,1 million US dollars and decreased by 5,1% compared to January-November  2023, including exports – 1856,3 million US dollars (by 20,2% less), imports – 4743,8 million US dollars (2,4% increased).
