Population size and migration

The population in the city of Almaty as of May 1, 2025 amounted to 2310,1 thousand people.

The natural increase in the population in January-April 2025 amounted to 6194 people (in the corresponding period of the previous year –7580 people).

The number of births as January-April 2025 amounted to 10225 people (11,6% less than in January-April 2024), the number of deaths amounted to 4031 people (1,3% more than in January-April 2024).

The balance of migration is positive and amounted to 11822 people (in January-April 2024 – 13113 people), including in external migration - a positive balance of - 964 people (1881), in internal – positive – 10858 people (11232).

Labor and income

The number of unemployed in the I quarter of 2025 amounted to 52,6 thousand people.

The unemployment rate was 4,5% of the labor force.

The number of persons registered with employment agencies as unemployed as of June 1, 2025 amounted to 31477 people, or 2,7% of the labor force.

The average monthly nominal wages accrued to employees (excluding small enterprises engaged in entrepreneurial activities) in the I quarter of 2025 amounted to 518857 tenge, an increase compared to the I quarter of 2024 amounted to 14,2%.

The real wage index in I quarter 2025 was 104%.

In the IV quarter of 2024 the average per capita nominal cash income of the population, according to the estimate, amounted to 387304 tenge, which is 22,2% higher than in IV quarter 2023, the growth rate of real cash income for the specified period is 11,9%.

Industry statistics

The volume of industrial production in January-May 2025 amounted to 976183 million tenge in current prices, which is 14,1% more than in January- May 2024.

In the manufacturing industry production volumes increased by 16,2%, a decrease in the supply of electricity, gas, steam, hot water and conditioned air - by 0,5% and an increase in water supply, collection, processing and waste disposal, pollution elimination activities - by 7,2%.

The volume of gross output of agricultural products (services) in January-May 2025 amounted to 1251,6 million tenge, or 97% by January-May 2024.

The volume of cargo turnover in January-May 2025 amounted to 9074,5 million t-km (taking into account the assessment of the volume of cargo turnover of individual entrepreneurs engaged in commercial transportation), or 105,5% compared to January-May 2024.

The volume of passenger turnover in January-May 2025 amounted to 8998,3 million p-km, or 123,9% by January-May 2024.

The volume of construction works (services) amounted to 200429,4 million tenge, or 124% compared to January-May 2024.

In January-May 2025, the total area of housing put into operation increased by 12,2% and amounted to 1138,8 thousand square meters, of which in multi-apartment buildings - by 20% (1005,1 thousand square meters). At the same time, the total area of individual residential buildings put into operation decreased by 24,4% (133,8 thousand square meters).

The volume of investments in fixed capital in January-May 2025 amounted to 714373,2 million tenge, or 128,2% by January- May 2024.

The number of registered legal entities as of June 1, 2025 amounted to 154215 units and increased by 2,2% compared to the corresponding date of the previous year, including 152471 units with less than 100 employees. The number of operating legal entities amounted to 113852 units, including 112202 units - small businesses. The number of registered small and medium enterprises (legal entities) in the city amounted to 144521 units and increased by 2,4% compared to the corresponding date of the previous year.

Economics

The volume of gross regional product for January-December 2024 (according to preliminary data) amounted to 29240856,9 million tenge at current prices. Compared to the corresponding period in 2023, real GRP increased by 5,6%. In the structure of GRP, the share of production of goods amounted to 6,5%, services – 85,7%.

The consumer price index in May 2025 compared to December 2024 was 106,9%.

Prices for food products increased by 5,2%, non-food products – by 2,8%, paid services for the population – by 11,6%.

The prices of enterprises producing industrial products in May 2025 compared to December 2024 increased by 4,3%.

The volume of retail trade in January-May 2025 amounted to 2506839,1 million tenge, or 7,9% more than the corresponding period in 2024.

The volume of wholesale trade in January-May 2025 amounted to 6274708,6 million tenge, or 103% compared to the corresponding period in 2024.

According to preliminary data, in January-April 2025, mutual trade with the EAEU countries amounted to 2572,2 million US dollars and increased by 14,3% compared to January-April 2024, including exports – 744,2 million US dollars (by 16,6% increased ), imports – 1828 million US dollars(by 13,4% increased).
