Population size and migration

The population of Almaty region as of October 1, 2024 amounted to 1551,4 thousand people, including 302,4 thousand people (19,5%) - urban, 1249,0 thousand people (80,5%) - rural residents.

The natural increase in the population in January-September 2024 amounted to 17124 people (in the corresponding period of the previous year –18251 people).

The number of births as January- September 2024 amounted to 24221 people (3.5% less than in January- September 2023) the number of deaths amounted to 7097 people (3,8% more than in January- September 2023).

The balance of migration is positive and amounted to 3059 people (in January- September 2023 – 392 people), including in external migration – a positive balance of 2294 people (in January- September 2023 - 948 people), in internal – positive 765 people and (in January- September 2023 (-556) people).

Labor and income

The number of unemployed in the III quarter of 2024 amounted to 35,3 thousand people.

The unemployment rate was 4,7% of the labor force.

The number of persons registered with employment agencies as unemployed as of November 1, 2024 amounted to 23505 people, or 3,1% of the labor force.

The average monthly nominal wages accrued to employees (excluding small enterprises engaged in entrepreneurial activities) in the III quarter of 2024 amounted to 308314 tenge, an increase compared to the III quarter of 2023 amounted to 13.1%. The real wage index in III quarter 2024 was 107,2%.

In the II quarter of 2024 the average per capita nominal cash income of the population of the region, according to the estimate, amounted to 148630 tenge, which is 9,8% higher than in II quarter 2023, the growth rate of real cash income for the specified period is 3,8%.

Industry statistics

The volume of industrial production in January-October 2024 amounted to 1565542,0 million tenge in current prices, which is  6,4% more than in January- October 2023.

In the mining industry, production volumes increased by 0,2%, in manufacturing industry by 6,1%, in the supply of electricity, gas, steam, hot water and air conditioned by 13,3%, in water supply, waste collection, processing and waste disposal, pollution elimination activities of 4%.

The volume of gross output of agricultural products (services) in January-October 2024 amounted to 576492.3 million tenge, or 100.1 % by January- October 2023.

The volume of cargo turnover in January-October 2024 amounted to 16317.9 million tkm (taking into account the assessment of the volume of cargo turnover of individual entrepreneurs engaged in commercial transportation) or 95.9% compared to January-October 2023.

The volume of passenger traffic –1265.2 million pkm. Or 165.2% by January-October 2023.

The volume of construction works (services) amounted to  274271.6 million tenge, or 23% compared to                         January-October 2023.

In January-October 2024, the total area of housing put into operation Increased by 3.7% and amounted to 838.2 thousand square meters, of which in multi-apartment buildings - by 13.6% (273.4 thousand square meters). At the same time, the total area of individual residential buildings put into operation decreased by 0,5% (564.6 thousand square meters).

The volume of investments in fixed capital in January-October 2024 amounted to 677919 million tenge, or 23.8% by January- October  2023.

The number of registered legal entities as of Novomber 1, 2024 amounted to 21049 units and increased by 106,4% compared to the corresponding date of the previous year, including 20559 units with less than 17848 employees. The number of operating legal entities amounted to 1 units, including 17360 units - small businesses. The number of registered small and medium enterprises (legal entities) in the region amounted to 17877 units and increased by 107,1% compared to the corresponding date of the previous year.

Economics

The volume of gross regional product for January-June 2024 amounted to 2406534.8  million tenge at current prices. Compared to the corresponding period of January-June 2023, real GRP increased by 7,3 %. In the structure of GRP, the share of production of goods amounted to 40,1%, services – 53,2%.

The consumer price index in January – October 2024 сompared to January – October 2023 was 106.1%. Prices for food products increased by 4.8%, non-food products – by 6.3%, paid services for the population – by 9.4%.

The prices of enterprises producing industrial products in January – October 2024 compared to January – October 2023 increased by 6.7%.

The volume of retail trade in January-October 2024 amounted to 531162,6 million tenge, or 102,1% more than the corresponding period in 2023.

The volume of wholesale trade in January- October 2024 amounted to 785143,9 million tenge, or 114,8% compared to the corresponding period in 2023.

According to preliminary data, in January- September 2024, mutual trade with the EAEU countries amounted to 732,7 million US dollarsand decreased by 5,3% compared to January- September 2023, including exports – 253,6 million US dollars (by 1% less), imports – 479 million US dollars(7,4% less).
