Summary of the socio-economic development of the region
Population size and migration

The population of Almaty region as of December 1, 2025 amounted to 1592,7 thousand people, including 308,3 thousand people (19,4%) - urban, 1284,4 thousand people (80,6%) - rural residents.

The natural increase in the population in January-November 2025 amounted to 17131 people (in the corresponding period of the previous year – 20615 people).

The number of births as January-November 2025 amounted to 25816 people (11,8% less than in January-November 2024) the number of deaths amounted to 8685 people (0,4% more than in January-November 2024).

The balance of migration is positive and amounted to 15397 people (in January-November 2024 – 6150 people), including in external migration – a positive balance of 4965 people (in January-November 2024 - 3519 people), in internal – positive 10432 people and (in January-November 2024 - 2631 people).

Labor and income

The number of unemployed in the III quarter of 2025 amounted to 35,7 thousand people.

The unemployment rate was 4,6% of the labor force.

The number of persons registered with employment agencies as by the end of December, 2025 amounted to 11600 people, or 1,5% of the labor force.

The average monthly nominal wages accrued to employees (excluding small enterprises engaged in entrepreneurial activities) in the III quarter of 2025 amounted to 343625 tenge, an increase compared to the III quarter of 2024 amounted to 11,5%.

The real wage index in III quarter 2025 was 99,6%.

In the III quarter of 2025 the average per capita nominal cash income of the population of the region, according to the estimate, amounted to 173001 tenge, which is 14,1% higher than in III quarter 2024, the growth rate of real cash income for the specified period is 2%.

Industry statistics

The volume of industrial production in January-December 2025 amounted to 2597459,3 million tenge at current prices, which is 10,1% higher than in 2024.  

In the manufacturing industry, on the contrary, an increase of 11% was recorded. At the same time, in the supply of electricity, gas, steam, hot water, and air conditioning, a decrease of 2,7% was observed, in the mining industry, production volumes decreased by 1,1% and in the water supply sector-sewerage, waste collection, treatment and disposal, and pollution remediation activities a decrease of 14,4%.

The volume of gross output of agriculture, forestry, hunting and fisheries products (services) in January-December 2025 amounted to 798381,7 million tenge, or 102% compared to 2024.

The volume of cargo turnover in January-December 2025 amounted to 21409,1 million tkm (taking into account the assessment of the volume of cargo turnover of individual entrepreneurs engaged in commercial transportation) or 109% compared to January-December 2024.

The volume of passenger traffic – 2425,7 million pkm or 145,2% by January-December 2024.

The volume of construction works (services) in January-December 2025 amounted 526303,5 million tenge, which is 18,4% more than in 2024.

In January-December 2025 the total area of housing increased by 10,2% and amounted to 1069,2 thousand square meters, of which in apartment buildings decreased - by 2,6% (377 thousand square metersе). The total area of individual residential buildings increased by 18,3% (689,5 thousand square meters).                      

The volume of investments in fixed capital in January-December 2025 amounted to 1355042 million tenge, or 29,4% higher than in 2024.

The number of registered legal entities as of January 1, 2026 amounted to 22097 units and increased by 5,1% compared to the corresponding date of the previous year, including 21594 units with less than 100 employees. The number of operating legal entities amounted to 18295 units, including 17795 units - small businesses. The number of registered small and medium enterprises (legal entities) in the region amounted to 18940 units and increased by 6,1% compared to the corresponding date of the previous year.

Economics

The volume of gross regional product for January-June 2025 amounted to 2946232,8 million tenge at current prices. Compared to the corresponding period of January-June 2024, real GRP increased by 6,6%. In the structure of GRP, the share of production of goods amounted to 40,3%, services – 48,7%.

The consumer price index in December 2025 сompared to December 2024 was 111,9%.

Prices for food products increased 11,8%, non-food products – by 11,4%, paid services for the population – by 13%.

The prices of enterprises producing industrial products in December 2025 compared to December 2024 increased by – 6,4%.

The volume of retail trade in January-December 2025 amounted to 841851,1 million tenge, or 114,4% compared to 2024.

The volume of wholesale trade in January-December 2025 amounted to 1354709,4 million tenge, or 116,6% compared to 2024.

According to preliminary data, in January-November 2025, mutual trade with the EAEU countries amounted to 1161,5 million US dollars and increased by 17,1% compared to January-November 2024, including exports – 457,4 million US dollars (25% more), imports – 704,1 million US dollars (12,5% more).
