Population size and migration

The population of Almaty region as of March 1, 2026 amounted to 1603.5 thousand people, including 309.8 thousand people (19.3%) - urban, 1293.7 thousand people (80.7%) - rural residents.

The natural increase in the population in January-February 2026 amounted to 2550 people (in the corresponding period of the previous year – 2869 people).

The number of births as January-February 2026 amounted to 3949 people (10.2% less than in January-February 2025) the number of deaths amounted to 1399 people (8.6% less than in January-February 2025).

The balance of migration is positive and amounted to 4414 people (in January-February 2025 – 3264 people), including in external migration – a positive balance of 794 people (in January-February 2025 - 1065 people), in internal migration – positive 3620 people and (in January-February 2025 - 2199 people).

Labor and income

The number of unemployed in the IV quarter of 2025 amounted to 35.6 thousand people.

The unemployment rate was 4.6% of the labor force.

The number of persons registered with employment agencies as by the end of March, 2026 amounted to 25972 people, or 3.3% of the labor force.

The average monthly nominal wages accrued to employees (excluding small enterprises engaged in entrepreneurial activities) in the IV quarter of 2025 amounted to 386257 tenge, an increase compared to the IV quarter of 2024 amounted to 9.2%.

The real wage index in IV quarter 2025 was 96.9%.

In the IV quarter of 2025 the average per capita nominal cash income of the population of the region, according to the estimate, amounted to 184937 tenge, which is 12.4% higher than in IV quarter 2024, the growth rate of real cash income for the specified period is 9.7%.

Industry statistics

The volume of industrial production in January-March 2026 amounted to 685534,1 million tenge in current prices, which is 17.8% more than in January-March 2025.

In the mining industry, production volumes increased by 52.7% while in the manufacturing industry production volumes increased by 20.1%, at the same time, supply of electricity, gas, steam, hot water and air conditioning increased by 5.0% and water supply, waste collection, processing and disposal activities increased by 7.9%.

The volume of gross output of agriculture, forestry, hunting and fisheries in January-March 2026 amounted to 123611.1 million tenge, or 101.9% by January-March 2025.

The volume of cargo turnover in January-March 2026 amounted to 2790.7 million tkm (taking into account the assessment of the volume of cargo turnover of individual entrepreneurs engaged in commercial transportation) or 86.9% compared to January- March 2025.

The volume of passenger traffic – 672.5 million pkm оr 116.2% by January-March 2025.

In January-March 2026 the volume of construction works (services) amounted 52702.4 million tenge, which is 10.7% more than in January-March 2025.

In January-March 2026 the total area of housing increased by 0.2% compared to January-March 2025 and amounted to 269 thousand square meters, of which in apartment buildings it decreased by a factor 9.6% (103,9 thousand square metersе).

The total area of individual residential buildings increased by 6.6% (165,2 thousand square meters).

The volume of investments in fixed capital in January-March 2026 amounted to 198291 million tenge, or 36.1% by January- March 2025.

The number of registered legal entities as of April 1, 2026 amounted to 22378 units and increased by 5.1% compared to the corresponding date of the previous year, including 21878 units with less than 100 employees. The number of operating legal entities amounted to 18328 units, including 17831 units - small businesses. The number of registered small and medium enterprises (legal entities) in the region amounted to 19219 units and increased by 6.2% compared to the corresponding date of the previous year.

Economics

The volume of gross regional product for January-September 2025 amounted to 4677463.0 million tenge at current prices. Compared to the corresponding period of January-September 2024, real GRP increased by 4.5%. In the structure of GRP, the share of production of goods amounted to 41.3%, services – 47.7%.

The consumer price index in March 2026 сompared to December 2025 was 102.8%.

Prices for food and non-food products increased by 2.6%, paid services for the population by 3.4%.

The prices of enterprises producing industrial products in March 2026 compared to December 2025 increased by 1.8%.

The volume of retail trade in January-March 2026 amounted to 185476.6 million tenge, or 112% more than the corresponding period in 2025.

The volume of wholesale trade in January-March 2026 amounted to 315513.7 million tenge, or 126.3% compared to the corresponding period in 2025.

According to preliminary data, in January-February 2026, mutual trade with the EAEU countries amounted to 188.8 million US dollars and increased by 1.6% compared to January-February 2025, including exports 79.3 million US dollars (a decrease of 4.3%), imports 109.5 million US dollars (an increase of 6.5%).
