Population size and migration

The population of Almaty region as of September 1, 2024 amounted to 1548,3 thousand people, including 302.2 thousand people (19.5%) - urban, 1246,1 thousand people (80.5%) - rural residents.

The natural increase in the population in January-August 2024 amounted to 15362 people (in the corresponding period of the previous year – 16063 people).

The number of births as January- August 2024 amounted to 21665 people (2,4% less than in January- August 2023) the number of deaths amounted to 6303 people (2,8% more than in January-July 2023).

The balance of migration is positive and amounted to 1752 people (in January-August 2023 – 223 people), including in external migration – a positive balance of 1712 people (in January- August 2023 - 948 people), in internal – positive 40 people and (in January- August 2023 (-725) people).

Labor and income

The number of unemployed in the II quarter of 2024 amounted to 35,1 thousand people.

The unemployment rate was 4,7% of the labor force.

The number of persons registered with employment agencies as unemployed as of Oktober 1, 2024 amounted to 25181 people, or 3,4% of the labor force.

The average monthly nominal wages accrued to employees (excluding small enterprises engaged in entrepreneurial activities) in the I quarter of 2024 amounted to 339550 tenge, an increase compared to the II quarter of 2023 amounted to 8.1%. The real wage index in II quarter 2024 was 102,2%.

In the II quarter of 2024 the average per capita nominal cash income of the population of the region, according to the estimate, amounted to 148 630 tenge, which is 9,8% higher than in II quarter 2023, the growth rate of real cash income for the specified period is 3,8%.

Industry statistics

The volume of industrial production in January-September 2024 amounted to 1397803,7 million tenge in current prices, which is 5,4% more than in January- September 2023.

In the mining industry, production volumes decreased by 0,1%, increased in manufacturing industry by 5,1%, in the supply of electricity, gas, steam, hot water and conditioned air there was by increase of 12,6%, in water supply, collection, processing and waste disposal, pollution elimination activities increase of 2,1%.

The volume of gross output of agricultural products (services) in January-September 2024 amounted to 480653,0 million tenge, or 101,9 % by January- September 2023.

The volume of cargo turnover in January- September 2024 amounted to 14726,9 million tkm (taking into account the assessment of the volume of cargo turnover of individual entrepreneurs engaged in commercial transportation) or 95,4% compared to January- September 2023.

The volume of passenger traffic –1081.8 million pkm. Or 158,4% by January- September 2023.

The volume of construction works (services) amounted to 243790,4 million tenge, or 28,8% compared to                         January-September 2023.

In January- September 2024, the total area of housing put into operation Increased by 8,9% and amounted to 777,1 thousand square meters, of which in multi-apartment buildings - by 53.9% (257,1 thousand square meters). At the same time, the total area of individual residential buildings put into operation decreased by 4,9% (517,3 thousand square meters).        

The volume of investments in fixed capital in January- September 2024 amounted to 614972 million tenge, or 32,8% by January- September 2023.

The number of registered legal entities as of October 1, 2024 amounted to 20935 units and increased by 106,5% compared to the corresponding date of the previous year, including 20448units with less than 17 656employees.        The number of operating legal entities amounted to 1 units, including 17171 units - small businesses. The number of registered small and medium enterprises (legal entities) in the region amounted to 17768 units and increased by 107,3%compared to the corresponding date of the previous year.

Economics

The volume of gross regional product for January-June 2024 amounted to 2406534.8 million tenge at current prices. Compared to the corresponding period of January-June 2023, real GRP increased by 7,3 %. In the structure of GRP, the share of production of goods amounted to 40,1%, services – 53,2%.

The consumer price index in January–September 2024 сompared to January–September 2023 was 106,2%. Prices for food products increased by 4.8%, non-food products–by 6.3%, paid services for the population–by 9,6%.

The prices of enterprises producing industrial products in January–September 2024 compared to January–September 2023 increased by 6.7%.

The volume of retail trade in January-September 2024 amounted to 470044.8 million tenge, or 101,3% more than the corresponding period in 2023.

The volume of wholesale trade in January-September 2024 amounted to 664223 million tenge, or 111,6% compared to the corresponding period in 2023.

According to preliminary data, in January- August 2024, mutual trade with the EAEU countries amounted to 650,3 million US dollarsand decreased by 6.7% compared to January- Jule 2023, including exports – 224 million US dollars (by 1.1% less), imports – 426,3 million US dollars(9,4% less).
