Summary of the socio-economic development of the region
Population size and migration

The population of the region as of April 1, 2024 amounted to 527,5 thousand people, including 258,5 thousand people (49%) – urban, 269 thousand people (51%) – rural residents.

The natural decline in the population in January-March 2024 amounted to -319 people (in the corresponding period of the previous year – -184 people).

The number of births as January January-March 2024 amounted to 1254 people (5,9% less than in January-March 2023), the number of deaths amounted to 1573 people (3,8% more than in January-March 2023).

The balance of migration is negative and amounted to - 2290 people (in January-March 2023 – -542 people), including in external migration – a negative balance of – 1238 people (+116), in internal – negative – 1052 people and (-658).

Labor and income

The number of unemployed in the I quarter of 2024 amounted to 13 thousand people.

The unemployment rate was 4,7% of the labor force.

The number of persons registered with employment agencies as unemployed as of Мay 1, 2024 amounted to 5464 people, or 1,9% of the labor force.

The average monthly nominal wages accrued to employees (excluding small enterprises engaged in entrepreneurial activities) in the I quarter of 2024 amounted to 270252 tenge, an increase compared to the I quarter of 2023 amounted to 12,1%.

The real wage index in I quarter 2024 was 102,4%.

In the IV quarter of 2023 the average per capita nominal cash income of the population of the region, according to the estimate, amounted to 175911 tenge, which is 12,5% higher than in IV quarter 2022, the growth rate of real cash income for the specified period is 1,2%.

Industry statistics

The volume of industrial production in January-April 2024 amounted to 228820,6  million tenge in current prices, which is 8,6% more than in January-April 2023.

In the manufacturing industry, production volumes increased by 11,1%, in the supply of electricity, gas, steam, hot water and conditioned air – by 0,6%, in the mining industry, production volumes decreased by 13,6%, in water supply, collection, processing and waste disposal, pollution elimination activities – by 7,9%.

The volume of gross output of agricultural products (services) in January-April 2024 amounted to 53889,5 million tenge, or 102,5% by January-April 2023.

The volume of cargo turnover in January-April 2024 amounted to 3239,8 million tkm (taking into account the assessment of the volume of cargo turnover of individual entrepreneurs engaged in commercial transportation), or 86,2% compared to January-April 2023.

The volume of passenger traffic – 203,9 million pkm, or 89,1% by January-April 2023.

The volume of construction works (services) amounted to 17942,5 million tenge, or 100,6% compared to January-April 2023. In January-April 2024, the total area of commissioned housing increased by 14.9% and amounted to 40.9 thousand square meters, of which in multi-apartment buildings - 1.5 times (7.6 thousand square meters). At the same time, the total area of commissioned individual residential buildings increased by 9% (33.3 thousand square meters). 

The volume of investments in fixed capital in January-April 2024 amounted to 112288 million tenge, or 134,7% by January-April 2023.

The number of registered legal entities as of May 1, 2024 amounted to 11404 units and increased by 0,7% compared to the corresponding date of the previous year, including 11146 units with less than 100 employees. The number of operating legal entities amounted to 9705 units, including 9447 units – small businesses.The number of registered small and medium enterprises (legal entities) in the region amounted to 8594 units and increased by 1,1% compared to the corresponding date of the previous year.

Economics

The short-term economic indicator for January-April 2024 compared to January-April 2023 amounted to 108,4%. The calculation of the short-term economic indicator is carried out to ensure efficiency and is based on changes in output indices for basic sectors: agriculture, industry, construction, trade, transport and communications, accounting for over 60% of GDP.

The volume of gross regional product for January- December 2023 amounted to 2229,3 billion tenge at current prices. Compared to the corresponding period of January- December 2022, real GRP decreased by 0,1%. In the structure of GRP, the share of production of goods amounted to 46,6%, services – 46,4%.

The consumer price index in April 2024 compared to December 2023 was 103,4%.

Prices for food products increased by 2,8%, non-food products – by 2,4%, paid services for the population – by 5,8%. The prices of enterprises producing industrial products in April 2024 compared to December 2023 increased by 3,1%.

The volume of retail trade in January-April 2024 amounted to 114393 million tenge, or 1,4% more than the corresponding period in 2023.

The volume of wholesale trade in January-April 2024 amounted to 144807 million tenge, or 101.3% compared to the corresponding period in 2023.

According to preliminary data, in January-March 2024, mutual trade with the EAEU countries amounted to 139,9 million US dollarsand desreased by 8% compared to January-March 2023, including exports – 24,1 million US dollars (by 41,1% less), imports – 115,8 million US dollars (4,2% more).
