Population size and migration

The population in the city of Almaty as of April 1, 2024 amounted to 2244,8 thousand people.

The natural increase in the population in January-March 2024 amounted to 5527 people (in the corresponding period of the previous year – 5338 people).

The number of births as January-March 2024 amounted to 8511 people (3,1% more than in January- March 2023), the number of deaths amounted to 2984 people (2,2% more than in January-March 2023).

The balance of migration is positive and amounted to 10620 people (in January-March 2023 – 7978 people), including in external migration - a positive balance of - 1433 people (1196), in internal – positive - 9187 people (6782).

Labor and income

The number of unemployed in the I quarter of 2024 amounted to 53,3 thousand people.

The unemployment rate was 4,7% of the labor force.

The number of persons registered with employment agencies as unemployed as of May 1, 2024 amounted to 26694 people, or 2,4% of the labor force.

The average monthly nominal wages accrued to employees (excluding small enterprises engaged in entrepreneurial activities) in the IV quarter of 2023 amounted to 474550 tenge, an increase compared to the IV quarter of 2022 amounted to 20,4%. The real wage index in IV quarter 2023 was 108,9%.

In the IV quarter of 2023 the average per capita nominal cash income of the population of the region, according to the estimate, amounted to 276199 tenge, which is 17,9% higher than in IV quarter 2022, the growth rate of real cash income for the specified period is 6,6%.

Industry statistics

The volume of industrial production in January-April 2024 amounted to 687338 million tenge in current prices, which is 0,6% less than in January-April 2023.

In the manufacturing industry production volumes increased by 1,6%, and in the supply of electricity, gas, steam, hot water and conditioned air decreased by 15,8% and in water supply, collection, processing and waste disposal, pollution elimination activities - by 11,9%.

The volume of gross output of agricultural products (services) in January-April 2024 amounted to 153,9 million tenge, or 125,1% by January-April 2023.

The volume of cargo turnover in January-April 2024 amounted to 6727 million t-km (taking into account the assessment of the volume of cargo turnover of individual entrepreneurs engaged in commercial transportation), or 106,4% compared to January-April 2023.

The volume of passenger traffic –5677,2 million p-km, or 121% by January-April 2023.

The volume of construction works (services) amounted to 118793,3 million tenge, or 105,7% compared to January-April 2023.

In January-April 2024, the total area of housing put into operation decreased by 11,3% and amounted to 740,5 thousand square meters, of which in multi-apartment buildings increased - by 2,8% (602,9 thousand square meters), individual residential buildings decreased by 44,7% (137,6 thousand square meters).

The volume of investments in fixed capital in January-April 2024 amounted to 389898 million tenge, or 104,8% by January-April 2023.

The number of registered legal entities as of May 1, 2024 amounted to 150220 units and increased by 4,2% compared to the corresponding date of the previous year, including 148520 units with less than 100 employees. The number of operating legal entities amounted to 117472 units, including 115876 units - small businesses. The number of registered small and medium enterprises (legal entities) in the city amounted to 140421 units and increased by 4,4% compared to the corresponding date of the previous year.

Economics

The short-term economic indicator for January-April 2024 compared to January-April 2023 amounted to 102,1%. The calculation of the short-term economic indicator is carried out to ensure efficiency and is based on changes in output indices for basic sectors: agriculture, industry, construction, trade, transport and communications, accounting for over 60% of GDP.

The volume of gross regional product for January-December 2023 amounted to 24828705,8 million tenge at current prices. Compared to the corresponding period of January- December 2022, real GRP increased by 10,1%. In the structure of GRP, the share of production of goods amounted to 6,9%, services – 86,1%.

The consumer price index in April 2024 compared to December 2023 was 102,9%.

Prices for food products increased by 4%, non-food products – by 2%, paid services for the population – by 2,6%.

The prices of enterprises producing industrial products in April 2024 compared to December 2023 increased by 2,7%.

The volume of retail trade in January-April 2024 amounted to 1708280.5 million tenge, or 6,5% more than the corresponding period in 2023.

The volume of wholesale trade in January- April 2024 amounted to 4629239.5 million tenge, or 97,8% compared to the corresponding period in 2023.

According to preliminary data, in January-March 2024, mutual trade with the EAEU countries amounted to 1631,3 million US dollars and decreased by 0,9% compared to January-March 2023, including exports – 444,8 million US dollars (by 25.4% less), imports – 1186,5 million US dollars(16,3% more).
