Summary of the socio-economic development of the region
Population size and migration

The population of the region as of April 1, 2024 amounted to 1134.9 thousand people, including 926,8 thousand people (81,7%) – urban, 208,1 thousand people (18,3%) – rural residents.

The natural increase in the population in January-March 2024 amounted to 1063 people (in the corresponding period of the previous year – 1167 people).

The number of births as January-March 2024 amounted to 3759 people (5% less than in January- March 2023), the number of deaths amounted to 2696 people (3,4% more than in January- March 2023).

The balance of migration is negative and amounted to - 1482 people (in January- March 2023 – -514 people), including in internal – -1491 people (-634), in was a positive balance in external migration – 9 people (120).

Labor and income

The number of unemployed in the I quarter of 2024 amounted to 23,7 thousand people.

The unemployment rate was 4,2% of the labor force.

The number of persons registered with employment agencies as unemployed as of April 1, 2024 amounted to 9646 people, or 1,8% of the labor force.

The average monthly nominal wages accrued to employees (excluding small enterprises engaged in entrepreneurial activities) in the I quarter of 2024 amounted to 360623 tenge, an increase compared to the I quarter of 2023 amounted to 14,6%. The real wage index in I quarter 2024 was 103,1%.

In the IV quarter of 2023 the average per capita nominal cash income of the population of the region, according to the estimate, amounted to 213251 tenge, which is 11,9% higher than in IV quarter 2022, the growth rate of real cash income for the specified period is 0,4%.

Industry statistics

The volume of industrial production in January-April 2024 amounted to 1149791,6 million tenge in current prices, which is 6,7% more than in January-April 2023.

In the mining industry, production volumes increased by 10,1%, in the manufacturing industry - by 5,4%, in the supply of electricity, gas, steam, hot water and conditioned air there was by 12,4%, in water supply, collection, processing and waste disposal, pollution elimination activities - by 11,6%.

The volume of gross output of agriculture, forestry and fisheries products (services) in January-April 2024 amounted to 63404,3 million tenge, or 99,2% by January-April 2023.

The volume of cargo turnover in January-April 2024 amounted to 12326.4 million tkm (аccounting for the amount of work performed by individual entrepreneurs engaged in commercial transportation), or 91,7% compared to January-April 2023.

The volume of passenger traffic – 856.3 million pkm, or 89,6% by January-April 2023.

The volume of construction works (services) amounted to 86758,9 million tenge, or 149,1% compared to January-April 2023.

In January-April 2024, the total area of commissioned housing increased by 5,2% and amounted to 186,9 thousand square meters, of which in multi-apartment buildings - by 18,4% (165,9 thousand square meters). At the same time, the total area of commissioned individual residential buildings decreased by 33,7% (19,4 thousand square meters).

The volume of investments in fixed capital in January-April 2024 amounted to 207022 million tenge, or 113,6% by January-April 2023.

The number of registered legal entities as of May 1, 2024 amounted to 28808 units and increased by 0,3% compared to the corresponding date of the previous year, including 28278 units with less than 100 employees. The number of operating legal entities amounted to 22699 units, including 22183 units - small businesses. The number of registered small and medium enterprises (legal entities) in the region amounted to 24939 units and increased by 0,2% compared to the corresponding date of the previous year.

Economics

The short-term economic indicator for January-April 2024 compared to January-April 2023 amounted to 107,7%. The calculation of the short-term economic indicator is carried out to ensure efficiency and is based on changes in output indices for basic sectors: agriculture, industry, construction, trade, transport and communications, accounting for over 60% of GDP.

The volume of gross regional product for January-December 2023 amounted to 8449346,4 million tenge at current prices. Compared to the corresponding period of 2022, real GRP increased by 0,1%. In the structure of GRP, the share of production of goods amounted to 50,5%, services –42,5%.

The consumer price index in April 2024 compared to December 2023 was 103,8%.

Prices for food products increased by 3,2%, non-food products – by 3%, paid services for the population – by 5,2%.   The prices of enterprises producing industrial products in April 2024 compared to December 2023 increased by 0,3%.

The volume of retail trade in January-April 2024 amounted to 427601,6 million tenge, or 3% more than the corresponding period in 2023.

The volume of wholesale trade in January- April 2024 amounted to 672864,3 million tenge, or 10,6% compared to the corresponding period in 2023.

According to preliminary data, in January-March 2024, mutual trade with the EAEU countries amounted to 608,2 million US dollars and decreased by 15,9% compared to January- March 2023, including exports – 345 million US dollars (by 21,5% less), imports – 263,2 million US dollars(7,3% less).
