Definition of the Indicator
The indicator measures the percentage of women and girls aged 15 years and older who have experienced physical, sexual, or psychological violence by a current or former intimate partner during the past 12 months. The prevalence of violence against women refers to the proportion of women who have experienced violence among those who were considered to be at risk of experiencing violence. For some forms of violence, such as sexual violence, all women can be considered to be at risk. For other forms, such as violence by an intimate partner, only women who currently have or have previously had an intimate partner are considered to be at risk.
Methodology for Calculation
The survey involved interviews with a group of women in the relevant age range (18–75 years), selected using a random sampling method. These women were asked questions about their experiences of violence and abuse, as well as a number of questions related to their health, life events, and their current or former partners. The information collected will be used, among other purposes, to understand the scale of violence against women, improve the quality of services provided to women, and identify ways to prevent violence in the future.
