Specially protected natural territories are areas of land, water surface and airspace above them, where natural complexes and objects are located that have special environmental, scientific, cultural, aesthetic, recreational and health-improving significance, which have been withdrawn by decisions of state authorities completely or partially from economic use and for which a special protection regime has been established. The indicator includes the area of specially protected areas in the country and its share in the total territory of the country.

"For this indicator, it is necessary to have maps and cadastres of all protected areas in the country indicating their location, the area of their territory, the date of creation and the regime of their protection in accordance with national legislation and relevant international requirements. For the purposes of interstate comparisons, protected areas can also be classified into IUCN categories. Monitoring and updating of data should be carried out annually. The percentage of protected areas can be calculated using the formula: Share of protected areas (%) =(total area of protected areas in ha or km2: total area of the country in ha or km2) x 100"

The responsible state body for the formation of data on specially protected natural territories is the Committee of Forestry and Wildlife of the Ministry of Ecology, Geology and Natural Resources of the Republic of Kazakhstan .
