    Dynamics of inflation

    Compared to March last year, tariffs for water disposal increased by 42%, cold water – by 36.5%, central heating – by 33.2%, hot water – by 31.9%, garbage collection – by 30.7%, electricity – by 26.1%.

    Prices for sanatorium services increased by 15.1%, organization of comprehensive recreation – by 13.6%, health services – by 12.7%, services in the field of recreation and sports events – by 12.6%, cellular services – by 12.4%, hairdressers and personal service establishments – by 11.6%. Travel by air passenger transport increased by 16.8%, taxi – by 12.3%, city bus – by 9.3%, intercity bus – by 6.7%, rail passenger transport – by 5%.

    The price level for new domestically assembled cars increased by 16.8%, pharmaceutical products – 11.3%, furniture and household items – 11.2%, clothes and shoes – by 10.9%, personal goods – by 9.9%, dishes – by 7.5%, building materials – by 6.6%. Diesel fuel rose in price by 15.1%, gasoline – by 13.6%, liquefied gas in cylinders – by 13%.

    An increases in prices was noted for rice by 22.7%, eggs – by 19%, fresh fruits – by 17.9%, mineral and drinking water – by 17%, soft drinks – by 15.7%, alcoholic beverages and tobacco products – by 14.2%, frech fish – by 12.8%, fruit and vegetable juices – by 12.2%, butter – by 11.6%, pasteurized milk – by 10.8%, canned milk, bakery and flour confectionery – by 10.2%, kefir 2.5% fat content – by 10.1%. A decrease in prices was observed for onions by 45%, buckwheat – by 25.1%, sunflower oil – by 24.6%, potato – by 10.9%, granulated sugar – by 10.1%.

    Regionally in March 2024 in annual terms, the inflation rate exceeding the republican average was observed in ten regions, of which the highest was in Karagandy (10.8%), Mangystau (10.1%) and Pavlodar (9.8%) regions.

    Contribution to the annual rate of inflation

    The largest contribution to the annual inflation rate was made by food and soft drinks (2.6 percentage points), housing services (2.1 percentage points), clothing and footwear (1 percentage points).

    During the year, prices for bakery products and cereals increased by 8.9%, meat and meat products – by 6% and made the main contribution to inflation of 0.6 and 0.7 percentage points, respectively. The rise in price of eggs by 19%, soft drinks – by 9.8% and contributed 0.2 percentage points each, dairy products (by 9.1%) – 0.4 percentage points, fruits and vegetables (by 5.4%) – 0.3 percentage points in annual inflation.

    Housing and communal services rose in price by 15.9% over the year and their contribution to inflation amounted to 2.1 percentage points. In March 2024, compared to March of last year, central heating increased by 33.2% and contributed to annual inflation by 0.3 percentage points, electricity (by 26.1%) – by 0.5 percentage points, cold water (by 36.5%), services for maintenance and repair of residential premises (by 7.6%), rental housing (by 7.3%) – by 0.2 percentage points.

    Glossary

    Inflation - an indicator that characterizes the change in time of the average price level for a fixed list of goods and services purchased by the population for personal consumption.

    Contribution - the amount of influence of the percentage change in the indicator on the overall value of inflation.

    Methodological explanations

    The consumer price index, which characterizes the level of inflation, reflects the change over time in the general level of prices for goods and services purchased by the population for personal consumption.

    The calculation of the consumer price index is based on information obtained from two sources:

    • data on price changes collected by their direct registration in specially selected for this purpose outlets and places of services;
    • household survey materials regarding the structure of actual consumer spending of the population.

    The collection of information on price changes is carried out in a selective circle of cities and regional centers, in all regional centers, in cities of republican significance and the capital. The choice of basic trade and service enterprises is carried out locally. Objects of all types of trade and paid services are selected so that the survey includes enterprises with different trading conditions and regularly selling goods (services) of mass demand.

    The set of goods and services for monitoring consumer prices and calculating the CPI is a single sample for all regions of Kazakhstan. The list of goods and services contains 508 items, which representatively includes the most representative types that occupy the largest share in the consumption of the population.

    The collection of information on prices is carried out directly at the places of sale of goods (services) by price registrars. Prices are fixed for goods paid on the day of the survey, including taxes, but excluding additional fees for their delivery.
