Definition of the Indicator
"The minimum level of proficiency serves as a benchmark for basic knowledge in a given domain (mathematics or reading), as measured through learning assessments. In the Programme for International Reading Literacy Study (PIRLS), four proficiency levels are defined: low, intermediate, high, and advanced. Students who have reached the intermediate benchmark are able to apply basic knowledge in a wide range of situations, consistent with the concept of minimum mastery."
Methodology for Calculation
"Data collection is carried out through the completion of cognitive test tasks. In the PIRLS study, reading literacy is assessed using a 1,000-point scale (with most country results falling within the range of 300 to 700 points). In PIRLS, students’ results are classified into four levels (low, intermediate, high, and advanced), which reflect the level of complexity in working with texts. The proportion of students who achieved at least the low level includes those who successfully completed tasks at higher levels of difficulty."
