Experts from the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) have conducted the second stage of the Review of the National Statistical System of Kazakhstan. At this stage of the Review, the current state of the statistical infrastructure, quality and international comparability of statistical data in the main areas of statistics are assessed. The team of international experts from the OECD Statistics and Data Directorate who arrived to conduct the Review is led by Julien Dupont, a representative of the Global Relations Division.
He is joined by the following experts: Nora Bohossian, a statistician in the Global Relations Division, David Brackfield, a representative of the Trade and Productivity Statistics Division, Bram Edens, a representative of the National Accounts Division, and Adrian Zerbe from the Global Relations Division. The experts are provided with advisory support by Steven Vale, who conducted the Global Assessment of the National Statistical System as a UNECE regional adviser in 2023.
Over the course of three days, OECD experts discussed key topics, including the management of key registers, classifications and international standards in statistical infrastructure, population and agricultural censuses, the system of national accounts, social and economic surveys, as well as labor statistics, prices and international trade. Particular attention was paid to compliance with the OECD recommendations on good statistical practice and the prospects for inclusion of environmental-economic accounts in Kazakhstan's statistics in 2025 were discussed.
"Since 2023, Kazakhstan has initiated activities to review the current methodology and assess the capacity of the National Statistical System. Last year, a global assessment was conducted with the participation of the OECD and an in-depth review was launched, this work will continue next year. We have received positive feedback from experts on the ongoing reforms in the field of state statistics, and the recommendations from the global assessment have already been included in our plan and are being successfully implemented," said Maxat Turlubayev, Head of the Bureau of National Statistics of the Republic of Kazakhstan.
Kazakhstan attaches special importance to cooperation with the OECD and adherence to the high standard of recommendations on statistical practice.
In 2023, an assessment of the legal and institutional framework for state statistics was carried out jointly with OECD and UNECE experts.
