Kazakhstan participates in the OECD Committee on Statistics and Statistical Policy meeting
On 22–23 June, Maxat Turlubayev, Head of the Bureau of National Statistics of the Agency for Strategic Planning and Reforms of the Republic of Kazakhstan, participated in the 23rd meeting of the OECD Committee on Statistics and Statistical Policy.
The annual meeting brought together representatives of national statistical offices from member countries to discuss current issues in the development of official statistics. Key topics included the use of new data sources and artificial intelligence technologies, improving the quality of statistical information, enhancing social surveys, and developing internationally comparable statistics on sustainable finance.
Particular attention was paid to the impact of artificial intelligence on the production of official statistics, including its potential to improve data quality and the associated risks.
During the meeting, Maxat Turlubayev presented an overview of Kazakhstan’s cooperation with the OECD. In particular, he informed participants that the three-year Review of the National Statistical System of Kazakhstan, conducted jointly with the OECD expert team, is nearing completion and that the progress achieved in the development of official statistics has received positive feedback.
He also highlighted the work being carried out by the Bureau of National Statistics to implement the OECD Recommendation on Good Statistical Practice, to which Kazakhstan adhered in 2025.
“Thanks to this Review, as well as the support of all members of the Committee, in July last year we reached a very important milestone for the entire national statistical system – Kazakhstan officially adhered to the Recommendation on Good Statistical Practice. We are very grateful to all Committee members for their trust, and I would like to reiterate Kazakhstan’s full commitment to maintaining the OECD’s high standards of statistical quality,” said Maxat Turlubayev.
On the margins of the Committee meeting, with the support of the Permanent Mission of the Republic of Kazakhstan to the International Organisations in Vienna, Maxat Turlubayev also held a bilateral meeting with Romina Boarini, Director of the OECD Centre on Well-being, Inclusion, Sustainability and Equal Opportunity (WISE).
The sides discussed key challenges faced by Kazakhstan in conducting household surveys and social surveys, as well as possible areas for cooperation.
