Bureau discussed participation in international electronic waste management project

Bureau of National Statistics met with international experts from UNEP, UNITAR, and representatives of the Centre for Sustainable Development Cooperation. The discussion focused on the Bureau’s potential participation in an international project on the management of electronic and electrical waste, as well as further steps related to methodological support, expert consultations, and data accounting of electrical and electronic equipment within production, international trade, and environmental statistics.

It is worth noting that Kazakhstan has approved the project “Promoting Circularity and Resource Efficiency in the Electronics Lifecycle in Kazakhstan” for the period 2026–2030. The initiative is implemented within the framework of the Global Electronic Waste Management Program (GEM), led by the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO). The project is executed by UNEP and the Kazakhstan Centre for Sustainable Development Cooperation (CSD Centre), with international expert support provided by UNITAR/SCYCLE.

The project has significant practical importance for improving the regulatory system for data collection and accounting. It opens new opportunities for updating existing approaches based on international best practices and strengthens the role of statistics as a key tool in the transition to a circular economy.

In this regard, the Bureau of National Statistics has been tasked with leveraging its capacity and applying best practices in the calculation of statistical indicators necessary for electronic waste accounting.
