A delegation of international experts will conduct a sectoral review of environmental statistics in Kazakhstan.
From September 24 to 27, experts from international organizations will conduct a sectoral review of Kazakhstan's environmental statistics. The delegation will include representatives from the UN Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE), the Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP), the Italian National Institute of Statistics, the independent research and consulting organization ICEDD (Belgium), as well as statisticians from the statistical offices of Georgia, Armenia, and others.
The experts visit aims to support Kazakhstan in developing and implementing effective indicators related to climate change, sustainable development, and the introduction of a system for environmental-economic accounting.
Given the global warming trend, climate change has become an increasingly urgent issue for Kazakhstan. In 2021, a new Environmental Code was adopted. By a Presidential decree, the concept of Kazakhstan’s transition to a «Green economy» was also revised this year, underscoring the country’s commitment to sustainable development. A significant step in this direction was the approval of the Carbon Neutrality Strategy by 2060, as well as the adoption of a classification for «green» projects eligible for financing. These measures foster a favourable environment for investments in eco-friendly technologies and projects.
Within the framework of the above-mentioned initiative, the Bureau is actively working on the implementation of climate change statistics indicators into national practice. The visit of international experts will be an important step in this work, as they will help to assess the current state of environmental statistics and the prospects for the implementation of climate change statistics in Kazakhstan. This co-operation will make it possible to identify relevant indicators that will contribute to more effective monitoring and management of the environmental situation in the country.
