At the end of 2024, the forest resource area of the Republic of Kazakhstan amounted to 13,898.7 thousand hectares. Compared with 2023, the area increased by 201.6 thousand hectares, of which 181.8 thousand hectares resulted from the expansion of other naturally regenerated forests.
Since 2014, the total increase in forest area has amounted to 1 271.7 thousand hectares, or 10.1%.
In monetary terms, the value of forest resources at the end of 2024 amounted to 177720.1 million tenge, compared with 165296.4 million tenge at the end of 2023.

Forest resources – forests and other wooded land recognized as natural assets within the framework of environmental-economic accounting.
Primary forests – naturally occurring forests that have retained their natural structure and show no signs of significant human disturbance.
Other naturally regenerated forests – forests regenerated naturally without direct establishment of forest stands by humans.
Forest plantations – forest areas established through the planting or sowing of trees.
Afforestation – the establishment of forest cover on land that was previously not forested.
Natural expansion of forest area – an increase in forest area resulting from the natural spread of trees and shrubs.
Deforestation – the loss of forest cover or the conversion of forest land to other land-use categories.
Natural reduction of forest area – a decrease in forest area caused by natural factors, including fires, diseases, pests, and adverse climatic conditions.
Revaluation – a change in the value of forest assets resulting from revisions to price parameters, source data, or valuation methods.
The Forest Asset Account is compiled in accordance with the SEEA Central Framework 2012. SEEA considers asset accounts as a tool for recording the stock of natural assets at the beginning and end of the reporting period, as well as the changes occurring during the period.
In physical terms, the Forest Resource Account records the area of forests and other wooded land. In monetary terms, the account presents the economic value of forest assets. The account is compiled by forest categories, including primary forests, other naturally regenerated forests, forest plantations, and other wooded land.
Changes in forest stocks include additions to stock, reductions in stock, and revaluation. Additions may result from afforestation and the natural expansion of forest area. Reductions may result from deforestation, natural reduction of forest area, and other changes.
