Brief description:
Protected areas – areas of land, water surface and air space over them where natural complexes and objects that have special environmental, scientific, cultural, aesthetic, recreational and improving value which are withdrawn by decisions of public authorities fully or partly from economic use and for which a special protection regime.The indicator includes the area of specially protected areas in the country and its share in the total territory of the country.
Methodology:
The indicator is formed in accordance with the "Methodology for the formation of environmental statistics indicators" approved by Order No. 223 of the Acting Chairman of the Statistics Committee of the Ministry of National Economy of the Republic of Kazakhstan dated December 25, 2015.

The responsible state body for the formation of data on specially protected natural territories is Committee of forestry and wildlife of the Ministry of ecology and natural resources Of the Republic of Kazakhstan.

Goal:
This indicator allows assessing the response to ecosystem degradation and loss of biodiversity in a country. It describes the degree of protection against misuse of areas that are valuable for the conservation of biodiversity, cultural heritage, scientific research, recreation, conservation of natural resources and other valuable components of the environment.
