Brief description:
The indicator is determined by the concentration of phosphates and nitrates in rivers, the total content of phosphorus and nitrogen in lakes, and nitrates in groundwater. Large amounts of nutrients entering freshwater reservoirs from urban, industrial and agricultural areas can lead to eutrophication of these reservoirs. This causes environmental changes that can be accompanied by the loss of plant and fish species (deterioration of environmental conditions) and has an adverse impact on water use for human consumption and other purposes.
Methodology:
The indicator is formed in accordance with the "Methodology for the formation of environmental statistics indicators" approved by Order No. 223 of the Acting Chairman of the Statistics Committee of the Ministry of National Economy of the Republic of Kazakhstan dated December 25, 2015.

The responsible state body for the formation of data on biogenic substances in freshwater is the specialized service of RSE «Kazhydromet» Ministry of ecology and natural resources of the Republic of Kazakhstan . The state of river pollution is assessed based on the results of analysis and processing of water samples collected at stationary stations. Surveys cover all major rivers and lakes of the Republic.
Unit:
Concentrations of phosphates and total phosphorus are expressed in mg P/ liter, nitrate concentrations are expressed in mg NO3
Goal:
This indicator allows you to determine the state of freshwater (rivers, lakes, and groundwater) in terms of their nutrient content.
